Where is the Competition Taking Place?
Bidding for the 2023 FIFA World Cup started in 2019 and a total of 9 countries expressed interest to play hosts to the football extravaganza. Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Argentina and South Africa were some of the countries that expressed interest and in the end Australia and New Zealand as co-hosts won it with 22 votes while Colombia came in second with 13 votes.
A total of five cities and 6 stadiums in Australia will be used to host the World Cup while 4 cities and 4 stadiums in New Zealand will host World Cup games. The opening game will take place in Eden Park in Auckland while the World Cup final will take place in Stadium Australia, Sydney.
Australia and New Zealand gain automatic qualification to the tournament being co-hosts. The prize money for this tournament will also be the most any FIFA World Cup for women has seen. FIFA has thrown in a massive $80 million to increase the prize money from $30 million in 2019 to $110 million in 2023. The eventual champions are set to walk away with $10.5 million in prize money while the runner-ups will take home $7.5 million.
In the lead up to the 2023 FIFA World Cup, there have been a few controversies that have quickly blown over. One of those controversies was similar to the 2022 FIFA World Cup for men in Qatar where the teams were keen on getting their captains to wear OneLove armbands.
Qatar did not agree to promoting the OneLove armbands and FIFA convinced teams to wear a neutral FIFA designed armband. The Women’s World Cup teams were also pushing to wear the OneLove armband for their captains but once again FIFA has convinced teams to wear the FIFA designed armband.
There was also an uproar from multiple teams when there were reports that FIFA was likely to sign Saudi Arabia as one of the main sponsors for the World Cup. Multiple countries protested stating that Saudi Arabia had a reputation for human rights abuse and
not treating women equally. FIFA eventually decided not to allow Saudi Arabia to play any role as a sponsor to the World Cup.
Russia is also not allowed to take part in the 2023 FIFA World Cup due to their war on Ukraine as Russia was banned by UEFA. Russian fans were not happy with the decision but it will stand.
Who Won World Cup 2019?
The 2019 FIFA World Cup for women took place in France and the United States went in as defending champions and tournament favorites. The USA was dominant throughout the tournament and ended up reaching the finals as predicted.
The Netherlands also had a good run at the 2019 FIFA World Cup for women and ended up making the finals were they had a massive test against the United States. While the Netherlands fought hard in the final, they found it very difficult to penetrate the United States defense and ended up losing 2-0. The United States picked up their 4th World Cup trophy with their win in 2019.
