Where is the Competition Taking Place?

Bidding for the 2023 FIFA World Cup started in 2019 and a total of 9 countries expressed interest to play hosts to the football extravaganza. Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Argentina and South Africa were some of the countries that expressed interest and in the end Australia and New Zealand as co-hosts won it with 22 votes while Colombia came in second with 13 votes.

A total of five cities and 6 stadiums in Australia will be used to host the World Cup while 4 cities and 4 stadiums in New Zealand will host World Cup games. The opening game will take place in Eden Park in Auckland while the World Cup final will take place in Stadium Australia, Sydney.

Australia and New Zealand gain automatic qualification to the tournament being co-hosts. The prize money for this tournament will also be the most any FIFA World Cup for women has seen. FIFA has thrown in a massive $80 million to increase the prize money from $30 million in 2019 to $110 million in 2023. The eventual champions are set to walk away with $10.5 million in prize money while the runner-ups will take home $7.5 million.

In the lead up to the 2023 FIFA World Cup, there have been a few controversies that have quickly blown over. One of those controversies was similar to the 2022 FIFA World Cup for men in Qatar where the teams were keen on getting their captains to wear OneLove armbands.

Qatar did not agree to promoting the OneLove armbands and FIFA convinced teams to wear a neutral FIFA designed armband. The Women’s World Cup teams were also pushing to wear the OneLove armband for their captains but once again FIFA has convinced teams to wear the FIFA designed armband.

There was also an uproar from multiple teams when there were reports that FIFA was likely to sign Saudi Arabia as one of the main sponsors for the World Cup. Multiple countries protested stating that Saudi Arabia had a reputation for human rights abuse and
not treating women equally. FIFA eventually decided not to allow Saudi Arabia to play any role as a sponsor to the World Cup.

Russia is also not allowed to take part in the 2023 FIFA World Cup due to their war on Ukraine as Russia was banned by UEFA. Russian fans were not happy with the decision but it will stand.

Who Won World Cup 2019?

The 2019 FIFA World Cup for women took place in France and the United States went in as defending champions and tournament favorites. The USA was dominant throughout the tournament and ended up reaching the finals as predicted.

The Netherlands also had a good run at the 2019 FIFA World Cup for women and ended up making the finals were they had a massive test against the United States. While the Netherlands fought hard in the final, they found it very difficult to penetrate the United States defense and ended up losing 2-0. The United States picked up their 4th World Cup trophy with their win in 2019.

World Cup 2023: Team Analysis

Rankings are current (10/07/2023) FIFA World Ranks

* Odds have been provided by William Hill and are accurate as of 10/07/23

United States (Ranked 1st)

Star Players: Alex Morgan (co-captain), Megan Rapinoe, Sophia Smith

Alex MorganMost football fans are going to bet on the United States to win the 2023 FIFA World Cup and pick up their 5th World Cup championship. They are the defending champions who are looking to win their third consecutive World Cup.

The United States are also currently ranked in first place on the FIFA World Cup rankings and have named a really strong squad for the World Cup.

The United States have a very talented squad with senior players like Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan looking to win another World Cup in 2023. They also have a number of talented young players who are looking to take over when the likes of Rapinoe and Morgan retire.

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski will have his fingers crossed as he will want all his key players to be fit and ready to go, especially as we get to the later stages of the tournament. The US could have a tough group stage as they are part of Group E which features Portugal, Netherlands and Vietnam.

Odds to win: 9/4

England (Ranked 4th)

Star Players: Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood, Mary Earps

Millie BrightEngland are ranked in 4th place on the FIFA World Cup rankings but will go into this World Cup ranked in the top 3 betting favorites to win the World Cup. One reason why this England team are highly rated is because they have been playing quality football in the lead-up to the FIFA World Cup and were previously unbeaten in 30 matches falling to a shock defeat to Australia in a friendly in April.

England managed to reach the 2019 FIFA World Cup semi-finals and will be looking to make the finals and lift the World Cup in 2023. England will go into this tournament with a lot of confidence having won the UEFA EURO 2022 and will look to upset tournament favorites the United States.

They have an experienced bunch of players as the likes of Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood, Mary Earps, Georgia Stanway and Rachel Daly were all part of the 2019 FIFA World Cup but will be missing their captain Leah Williamson due to injury with Millie Bright filling in the role for this tournament.

Odds to win: 7/2

Germany (Ranked 2nd)

Star Players: Lea Schuller, Tabea Wassmuth, Jule Brand

Alexandra PoppGermany are ranked 2nd on the FIFA World Cup leaderboard and are one of the teams to watch out for.

German fans were extremely disappointed with the performance of the national team during the men’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar and will get behind the women’s football team to see if they can run hot at the 2023 FIFA World Cup.

Germany will look to adopt a 4-3-3 format and play an aggressive brand of football. They have a number of exciting players in their squad, especially with their forwards.

One area where Germany will differ from the other teams is in the mid-field with the likes of Felicitas Rauch and Sophia Kleinherne.

Odds to win: 7/1

Sweden (Ranked 3rd)

Star Players: Caroline Seger (c), Olivia Schough, Stina Blackstenius

Caroline SegerSweden are the 3rd ranked team on the FIFA World rankings and go in with one of the most experienced squads in the World Cup. One of the players to watch out for is Caroline Seger who is the most experienced player in European football.

Sweden has decided to go in with a bunch of experienced players which has both its pros and cons to it. Some of the players like Olivia Schough, Sofia Jakobsson and Linda Sembrant have loads of experienced in playing in big tournaments but there are question marks as some fans feel coach Peter Gerhardsson should have taken a risk and taken a few more young players in the squad.

The big weakness that Sweden has shown in recent times is that they can get passive at times and go nowhere with the ball. These are the moments where they make mistakes and end up on the losing side. Gerhardsson and his team will have to go in with a strong game plan to nullify these weaknesses if Sweden is going to be a threat in this tournament.

Odds to win: 16/1

Dark Horse: Brazil (Ranked 8th)

Star Players: Andressa Alves, Bia Zaneratto and Ana Vitória

Rafaelle SouzaBrazil were the betting favorites to win the 2023 FIFA World Cup in the men’s division but they are not favorites in the women’s FIFA World Cup. Our betting experts are putting them down as a dark horse as they are ranked in 8th place on FIFA’s leaderboard rankings.

One reason why we back the South American team to be able to go all the way at the 2023 FIFA World Cup is because they have an extremely talented team that need to come together to work as a unit to become champions.

Brazil has struggled at the women’s FIFA World Cup in the past with their best finish coming in 2007 when they made the finals but ended up losing to Germany.

They have played well at the continental level as their results of winning Eight Copa América Femenina titles speak for themselves. They will need to rise to the occasion at the World Cup and some of the players that can help them do that include Rafaelle Souza (c), Debinha and Marta who will be playing her sixth World Cup.

Odds to win: 25/1

Our Prediction

If you are looking to make a safe bet, then go ahead and put your money on the United States as they have been so dominant for the last decade winning in 2015 and 2019. However, it is a tall order for them to win three in a row as some of their top players are now nearing the end of their career.

The big question is whether some of their challengers in England, Germany and the Netherlands will be able to put together a consistent run at the World Cup and upset the United States. There are a lot of factors involved such as team selection, injuries and red cards which we will get to know only as the tournament progresses.

If you are looking to take a chance and bet against the United States, then put your money either on England or Germany to win!

AU/NZ 2023: Golden Boot Special

FIFA World Cup: Golden BootThe Golden Boot award will be given to the player who ends up scoring the highest number of goals at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Some of the best strikers in the world love to win this prestigious award as it puts them down forever in the history books and also improves their brand value and raises their value as a player.

Some of the big name contenders for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup Golden Boot award include the 2019 Golden Boot winner Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan who narrowly missed winning the award.

They are the two favorites since they play for the United States as the US is the betting favorite to win the World Cup. However, also look out for Alexia Putellas (Spain), Alex Popp (Germany) and Marta (Brazil).

Who Won the 2019 World Cup Golden Boot?

Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan were tied on 6 goals each when the competition finished but since Rapinoe had played a few minutes lesser than Morgan during the competition, the award went to Rapinoe.

One of the goals that Rapinoe scored was due to a penalty kick that Morgan won but Rapinoe took, so for some fans Alex Morgan is the unofficial Golden Boot winner. Ellen White from the UK also finished on 6 goals while Australia’s Sam Kerr scored 5.

Alex Morgan

Odds to win: 5/1

Alex MorganAlex Morgan did not win the 2019 Golden Boot award because she had more minutes on the clock than Megan Rapinoe. She enters the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup as a betting favorite to win the Golden Boot this year.

The 34 year old is one of the most dangerous strikers in the competition and has a wealth of experience now as she prepares to play her 4th World Cup. She now has over 200 caps for the United States and is one of the most respected players in the world today.

International Record: 121 goals in 207 apps
Tournaments: World Cup (9 Goals – 6 at France 2019), CONCACAF W Championship (10 Goals – 7 at USA 2018)

Sophia Smith

Odds to win: 13/1

Sophia SmithThe United States is going to depend heavily on Alex Morgan and Sophia Smith to score for them during the World Cup. The one player that can give Morgan competition for the Golden Boot is the 22 year old Smith.

Smith is an exciting prospect that is looking to make her mark and become the new face of U.S Women’s soccer. She played her first game back in Nov 2020 and scored her first goal nearly a year later Sep 2021. She won the Young Female Player of the Year in 2017 and started all 5 games during the 2022 Concacaf W Championship.

She also holds the record for being the 5th youngest player to score a hat-trick in April 2022 in USWNT history.

International Record: 12 goals in 30 apps
Tournaments: CONCACAF W Championship (2 Goals at Mexico 2022)

Esther González

Odds to win: 10/1

Esther GonzalezSpanish football bettors and fans will pin their hopes on the 30 year old Esther González to find the back of the net for Spain and help them win the 2023 World Cup. One reason why González could win the boot is because Spain has a pretty weak competition in the Group stage as they face Costa Rica, Zambia and Japan.

Spain should be able to score easily in the Group stages and González who plays for Real Madrid could end up scoring quite a few of those goals in the Group stage, making her a top contender for the Golden Boot.

International Record: 25 goals in 35 apps
Tournaments: Euros (1 Goal at England 2022), Cup of Nations (3 Goals at Australia 2023)

Rachel Daly

Odds to win: 10/1

Rachel DalyThe Brits will depend heavily on Rachel Daly to deliver on the big stage as she will be one of the key forwards for England. Don’t let her stats for England fool you as she played a lot of games as a left-back versus now where she will play as a striker and have more chances to score.

Daly has blossomed as a striker ever since she joined Aston Villa where she got the chance to really shine. She ended up finding the back of the net 22 times during the 2022/23 WSL campaign and won multiple awards including the Player of the Season and the Golden Boot award for the most goals scored in a single season.

International Record: 13 goals in 69 apps
Tournaments: Arnold Clark Cup (2 Goals at England 2023)

The Dark Horse: Samantha Kerr

Odds to win: 12/1

Samantha KerrThe more matches you play, the more opportunity you have to score and win the Golden Boot. Samantha Kerr is an exceptional striker as she showed in the 2019 World Cup when she scored 5 goals for Australia.

Odds makers don’t expect Australia to pose a big threat at the 2023 World Cup and hence Kerr will have fewer games to score and win the Golden Boot. Her best chance will come in the Group stages and give her striking prowess, she is definitely a dark horse to win the Golden Boot.

The 29 year old who is the highest goal scorer for Australia in both men and women’s football. She is considered by many to be one of the best forwards in the history of women’s football and it would be fitting if she ends up winning the 2023 Golden Boot award.

International Record: 63 goals in 120 apps
Tournaments: World Cup (5 Goals at France 2019), Cup of Nations (4 Goals – 3 Goals at Australia 2019), Asian Cup (12 Goals – 7 Goals at India 2022)

Our Prediction

We expect the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be the most exciting women’s football tournament in history as the intensity of women’s football has grown to an all-time high. Showcasing some of the best players in the world in terms of defense and offense, we expect to see some fantastic goals being scored by world class quality strikers.

Alex Morgan is definitely a fan favorite to win the Golden Boot and it will be hard to bet against her given her accomplishments. However, could this be the tournament where Morgan passes on the baton to the new generation and Sophia Smith ends up with the Golden Boot?

Will Spain or England be able to cause a massive tournament upset by eliminating the United States and in doing so can either Esther Gonzalez or Rachel Daly become the next Golden Boot award winner.

Will Samantha Kerr score heavily in the Group stages to win Golden Boot award?

Our experts are going to back betting favorite Sophia Smith to shine on the big stage and win the 2023 Golden Boot award!
