2023 ICC Cricket World Cup – Upsets and Surprises

Before our cricketing experts look at the betting odds and share their predictions for the 2023 ODI World Cup, we will do a quick overview of the tournament and focus on the highlights to give our readers a reminder of what took place over the last 6 weeks.

Major Upsets

The biggest disappointment of the tournament was the performance of defending champions England. They ended up losing 6 out of their 9 games and looked completely out of sorts during the tournament. The biggest surprise at the 2023 ODI World Cup was Afghanistan who defeated England by 69 runs on Oct 15 and on Oct 23 surprised Pakistan and beat them by 8 wickets. Another huge upset was when the Netherlands beat South Africa on Oct 17 by 38 runs.

The biggest controversy at the 2023 World Cup was when Bangladesh played Sri Lanka on 06 Nov and won. Bangladesh won after captain Shakib Al Hasan took the decision to appeal and get Angelo Matthews dismissed via time-out. This was the first time in the history of the ODI game that a batsman was timed-out.

Matthews reached the crease before the stipulated 3 minutes but since his helmet strap broke, he went back to get a new helmet and the 3 minutes elapsed. Shakib Al Hasan appealed and after the umpires confirmed he really wanted to go through with his decision, Matthews was given out.

The cricketing world turned on Shakib Al Hasan for poor sportsmanship but the Bangladesh captain did not back down saying he followed the rules of the game and would do anything to win for his country.

Sri Lanka who won only 2 out of their 9 games faced a massive backlash at home which resulted in the Sri Lankan government intervening and sacking the Sri Lankan Cricket Board. That decision forced the ICC to suspend Sri Lanka from ICC membership due to government involvement.

Major Surprises

One of the main reason’s this World Cup has been a massive success is due to the performance of the Indian team. India set the tournament on fire and made it to the final undefeated, having won every single game in style.

India have been outstanding with their batting and bowling throughout the tournament which is why they enter the final with both the leading run scorer and leading wicket taker in the tournament. Virat Kohli is the top run scorer with 711 runs from 10 innings with an astonishing average of 101.57. The leading wicket taker is Mohammed Shami who only came in as a replacement and now has 23 wickets from just 6 games at an impressive average of 9.13.

India

India go into the ICC ODI World Cup final as betting favourites which comes as no surprise as India have reached the finals undefeated. They have won all 10 of their games on the trot and have looked invincible in the lead up to the World Cup finals.

India played Australia earlier in the tournament on Oct 08 and had a comfortable win after bundling the Aussies out for 199. The Indian spinners picked up 6 wickets to put the Aussies under pressure and KL Rahul went on to make an unbeaten 97 to help India win by 6 wickets.

What’s worked well for India during this tournament is that the batting and bowling line-up have clicked and have fired together. They lost star all-rounder Hardik Pandya early on in the tournament and that paved the way for Mohammed Shami to get a place in the squad which worked out brilliant for India as Shami has been exceptional and is now the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 23 wickets.

Shami was instrumental in helping India beat New Zealand in the semi-finals and advance after he picked up 7 wickets. The Indian batting line-up has also looked terrific with Captain Rohit Sharma playing freely at the top of the order and giving his players the license to play their shots.

Virat Kohli has an average of over 100 in the tournament and is the highest run scorer with 711 runs. He scored a century in the semi-final and so did Shreyas Iyer who has been a rock in the middle order along with KL Rahul.

India have the home advantage going into the finals and that will serve them in good stead. They will also have massive support at the Narendra Modi Stadium with a sea of blue supporting them. This is likely to be another high scoring game as both sides have a strong batting line-up. India do have the advantage in the bowling line-up as they have a better spin attack that will cause problems for the Aussie batsmen, especially if Australia bat second.

The one big concern for India is their fielding as they were not up to the mark in the semi-finals and missed a lot of chances. They cannot afford to have another bad day in the field against the Aussies as Australia will make them pay if they are not on top of their fielding game.

Odds To Win: 2/5

One To Watch: Virat Kohli

Virat KohliWhile India’s batting line-up as fired as a whole during this tournament, this has been Virat Kohli’s World Cup without a doubt. He has been in spectacular form throughout the tournament and will finish as the leading run scorer. King Kohli made history in the semi-finals when he ended up scoring his 50th ODI hundred to surpass the great Sachin Tendulklar for the most ODI hundreds.

When Kohli hits a purple patch of form, it tends to last for a long period of time. Indian fans will have their fingers crossed and hope that King Kohli can once again repliacate that form during the World Cup finals against Australia. Kohli is a big match player and there’s no bigger stage than the ODI World Cup.

Kohli turned 35 on 5th November and is unlikely to be around for the next ODI World Cup in 2027. Kohli was part of the Indian squad that won the 2011 World Cup and would like to finish his ODI career by bringing home the 2023 ODI World Cup by putting in another top performance with the bat.

Australia

Australia did not have a great start to their ODI World Cup in India and ended up losing 2 games on the trot. They lost to India and South Africa and were under a lot of pressure to get their act together, which they did and ended up winning their next 8 consecutive games to reach the ODI World Cup finals.

Australia managed to turn things around thanks to the arrival of Travis Head who missed the first couple of games as he was recovering from injury. His presence in the side gave them the momentum to play more freely and be more aggressive. While India have had a comfortable run to the ODI World Cup finals, it has been a struggle for Australia as they have had a couple of tough games.

One of those games that Australia got into trouble was against Afghanistan but they managed to bail themselves out after Glenn Maxwell played an incredible innings, scoring a double century and taking them over the line. Maxwell hit 201 of just 108 balls in what will go down as one of the best innings of the tournament!

Australia haven’t fired as a team consistently in their batting and bowling departments but they have managed to win because in each game, someone puts their hand up and plays an outstanding innings with the bat or has a fantastic game with the ball.

The big concern for Australia is how well their Captain Pat Cummins handles the pressure. Earlier in the tournament, after Australia suffered two losses, Cummins received criticism down under for not being aggressive with his captaincy, waiting for things to happen and letting the game drift.

Cummins will need to lead from the front and be proactive with his leadership skills or it could end up hurting Australia in the final.

Odds To Win: 2/1

One To Watch: Adam Zampa

Adam ZampaThe big names in the Australian squad that will get the most attention for the ODI World Cup final will be the likes of David Warner, Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Starc. However, our cricketing pundits believe that the player who could make a big difference is leggie Adam Zampa.

Zampa does not have the spotlight on him going into the finals but he will be a key player. He is the second leading wicket taker in the tournament after Shami and has 22 wickets from 10 games at an average of 21.40. If he ends up having a good game in the final, he could end up surpassing Shami and finishing as the leading wicket taker in the tournament.

We expect the track at the Narendra Modi Stadium to offer a lot of assistance to the spinners. If Australia ends up bowling second, it will work in favour of Zampa who will benefit from bowling on the pitch second and having runs on the board to put pressure on the Indian batsmen. On the contrary, if Zampa ends up having a bad game with the ball, it could hurt Australia’s chances to win as he is their top spinner.

Our Predication

We expect India to deliver once again in the tournament, keep their record unbeaten and lift their third ODI World Cup championship in front of 100,000 screaming Indian fans.

There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding whether India or Australia will end up winning the final. One of the big factors will be the toss as whoever wins the toss will look to bat first. No team wants to have the pressure of chasing down a total in the ODI World Cup finals and hence the team that wins the toss, will have an immediate edge.

Given the fact that India are unbeaten in the tournament so far and have already beat Australia in the round-robin stage, they will enter this final full of confidence. If India bat first, they will feel confident with whatever total they get as their bowlers have been in great form.

Australian betting odds could swing in their favour if they win the toss and end up putting up a total in excess of 280. If Australia lose the toss and bat second, it will be a lot harder for them to beat India.

Result: We will be putting our money on India to win the ODI World Cup final in convincing fashion!
