What Happened In 2019?

The 2019 ICC World Cup final took place in England and Wales. Hosts England made it to the World Cup finals and took on New Zealand.

This final will go down in the record books as one of the most closely contested and nail-biting finals in ICC World Cup history.

The match ended in a tie and was forced to go into a super over. England ended up winning the super over but in controversial fashion as cricketing fans around the world felt that England benefitted from a bad umpiring decision.

England won based on the heroics of their talisman Ben Stokes while New Zealand were left gutted by coming so close to winning their first ODI World Cup and falling short.

2023 Men’s ICC ODI World Cup Team Analysis

* Odds have been provided by 888sport and are accurate as of 29/09/2023

India (Ranked 1)

2019 Result: Quarter-finals
Players to watch: Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma (c), Jasprit Bumrah
Odds to win: 3.25

Rohit SharmaIndia go into this tournament having the biggest advantage as they are playing in home conditions. They will also field a strong team as most of their top players are fit and raring to go. The pitches in these ODI matches will favour the spinners and India have a top quality spin attack. India are currently ranked in first place on the ICC ODI World Ranking.

Rohit Sharma will captain their side for the first time in an ODI World Cup which is likely his last ODI World Cup and will want to end on a winning note and lift the 2023 ICC World Cup. While India does have the advantage of playing at home, the pressure and expectations of 1.4 billion cricket crazy fans might end up getting the better of India in crucial games.

Indian Squad:
Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ishan Kishan, Surya Kumar Yadav.

England (Ranked 5)

2019 Result: Winners
Players to watch: Jos Butler (c), Ben Stokes, Joe Root
Odds to win: 4.00

Jos ButlerEngland are the defending champions and are currently ranked in 5th place on the ICC ODI World rankings. Things are going to be very different for England in the sub-continent as they had success in the last World Cup playing at home where the conditions heavily favoured them.

England have a very strong squad, especially in the batting department as many of their players have experience playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) including captain Jos Butler who will be a key player for them. England’s squad has been boosted by all-rounder Ben Stokes coming out of retirement. Stokes was the key to England’s World Cup victory in 2019.

England Squad:
Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes.

Australia(Ranked 3)

2019 Result: Semi-finals
Players to watch: David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith
Odds to win: 5.0

Pat CumminsAustralia sit in 3rd place on the ODI World rankings and are coming off a 1-2 series loss against India in the lead up to the World Cup. You can never count the Aussies out as they have shown that they have both the players and the ability to step up their game in big tournaments.

Australia like England have multiple players who have done well in the sub-continent playing in the IPL. They go into the 2023 ICC World Cup with a new captain in Pat Cummins and have selected a number of all-rounders for this tournament.

Australian Squad:
Pat Cummins (c), Steve Smith, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis, Sean Abbott, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Marnus Labuschagne, Mitch Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc.

Pakistan (Ranked 2)

2019 Result: Group stage
Players to watch: Babar Azam (c), Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman
Odds to win: 8.00

Babar AzamPakistan don’t travel to play in India in any tournaments due to the political situation between the two countries. However, India granted Pakistan’s players an exception to the ODI World Cup albeit they gave them their visas late.

Pakistan currently sit in 2nd place on the ICC World Cup rankings and their game against India will be one of the most anticipates games in the tournament especially after the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 group game. Pakistan will be led by Babar Azam who will be under extra pressure along with his side as they will be playing in front of many hostile fans.

Pakistan have the talent to win the ICC World Cup but can they do it in India, is a big question!

Pakistan Squad:
Babar Azam (c), Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan, Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Salman Ali Agha, Mohammad Nawaz, Usama Mir, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Wasim.

Dark Horse: New Zealand (Ranked 6)

2019 Result: Finals
Players to watch: Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips, Kane Williamson (c)
Odds to win: 8.00

Kane WilliamsonNew Zealand suffered a terrible loss at the 2019 World Cup finals against England and will be keen on going all the way this time and winning the 2023 World Cup. They will once again be captained by their most experienced player in Kane Williamson and have selected a very experienced side which includes their top fast bowlers Trent Boult and Time Southee.

New Zealand are ranked in 6th place on the ICC ODI World Cup rankings and a lot of cricket fans are not expecting New Zealand to repeat their performance in 2019. However, we consider them dark horses as they have shown repeatedly that they can beat the best teams in the World.

New Zealand Squad:
Kane Williamson (c), Trent Boult, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitch Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Will Young.

Our Prediction

The odds are heavily in favour of India and we do expect them to have a good run in the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup. However, will they be able to withstand the expectation and pressure of 1.4 billion Indian fans and win the World Cup?

We think that’s going to be the difference and hence why we are going to back England to win a second consecutive World Cup. If you want to take a calculated risk, go ahead and put your money on the dark horse New Zealand to win their first ODI World Cup.
