The 2023 French Open, which is the second Grand Slam of the year, will take place at Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France from May 22 to Jun 11. All of the top tennis players in the men’s and women’s division will make their way to Roland-Garros to compete on a hard court surface made out of clay.
The French Open is considered by many players to be the most gruelling and toughest of all the tennis Grand Slams to win because of the infamous red court clay surface and difficult weather conditions as the temperature can often get really hot during the French Open.
There is added financial incentive for players to participate in the 2023 French Open as Roland-Garros has announced an increase (12.3 percent) in overall prize money this year when compared to 2022. Tournament organizers confirmed that the singles competition will see an increase of 9.1 percent year on year to ensure that the prize money is more evenly distributed amongst all participants.
Players who get eliminated during the first three rounds of the French Open can expect to walk away with nearly 13 percent more when compared to 2022. The prize money in the doubles division has increased by 4 percent. The winners of the 2023 French Open championship in the men’s and women’s singles division will get €2.3 million each.

What Happened Last year
Novak Djokovic entered the 2022 French Open as the favorite to win the tournament while Rafael Nadal was the 5th seed which was surprising given the fact that Nadal has dominated Roland-Garros. Nadal entered the tournament with 13 French Open Grand Slams to his name and showed fans yet again why he is the GOAT at Roland-Garros.
Nadal ended up beating arch-rival Novak Djokovic in the quarter finals, then 3rd seed Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals to make it to another French Open singles championship final. He faces Norwegian Casper Ruud who had a much easier route to the final.
It was a very much a one sided-final to the disappointment of the fans as Nadal ended up winning 6–3, 6–3, 6–0. While the final was a let-down in terms of being a competitive match, fans were still happy as Nadal continues to be a crowd favourite in Paris.
Iga Świątek was the number one rank seed in the women’s division and she delivered at the French Open by putting in a dominant performance. Świątek ended up facing American Coco Gauff in the finals and made easy work of the American winning 6–1, 6–3. This was her second French Open championship win and made her the youngest female player since Maria Sharapova to win multiple Grand Slams since 2006.
French Open 2023: Latest Odds
As of this writing, France does not require any proof of COVID-19 vaccination for international visitors to enter the country and hence we can expect tennis ace Novak Djokovic to be a part of the 2023 French Open. While fans are sure to see Djokovic, it now looks unlikely that they will see Rafael Nadal in action.
Nadal is the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) when it comes to Roland-Garros as the Spaniard has won the French Open 14 times in 18 years and has 22 Grand Slams to his name. He continues to battle health issues and it could be highly likely that Nadal never plays at Roland-Garros again.
There is going to be a lot of room at the top of the men’s division with Roger Federer now retired and Rafael Nadal unlikely to play at the French Open. Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz are currently the number one and two ranked players in the world and they will be the favorites to win the 2023 French Open.
Iga Świątek is currently the world number one and 3rd ranked Jessica Pegula are going to be strong contenders to win at the French Open. If for some reason Iga Świątek gets eliminated in the quarter-finals or semis, it will leave the division wide open for someone new to become the 2023 French Open champion.
Australian firebrand Nick Kyrgios has preferred not to play the French Open as he finds it does not suit his style of player but announced that he is thinking of playing the 2023 French Open as his girlfriend is keen to visit Paris. While Kyrgios will not be a favorite to win on clay, his presence is bound to get the crowd going!

Mens Prediction
Favourite: Carlos Alcaraz (5/4)
The 20 year old Spaniard is the betting favorite to win the 2023 French Open and rightfully so as he has been in top form on the clay courts. Carlos Alcaraz who is the world number 2 as of this writing will take the world number 1 ranking from Djokovic when the updated rankings are released on May 22.
Alcaraz currently has a 20/1 record on clay during 2023 and has won titles in Madrid and Barcelona to show that he is very comfortable playing on clay and is likely to take the baton as the best clay court player in the world once his fellow country Rafael Nadal retires.
Alcaraz has just one Grand Slam win to his name as he took down the 2022 US Open but is pipped to be one of the brightest stars in the men’s division going forward. With Federer retired, Nadal and Djokovic close to retirement, it looks like Alcaraz could be one of the players to dominate men’s tennis for the next decade and he will want to do that with a French Open championship win!
Sleeper Pick: Novak Djokovic (2/1)
While Alcaraz is going to be a huge betting favorite at the 2023 French Open, it is very difficult to write off Novak Djokovic who has won the French Open in 2016 and 2021. Granted, the clay court at Roland-Garros isn’t the Serbs favorite surface in the world, he is still a dangerous player given his wealth of experience.
Djokovic will turn 36 when the French Open starts and his fitness and endurance will be key to how well he plays and performs as the clay courts can be unforgiving on older players.
Longshot: Stefanos Tsitsipas (10/1)
Stefanos Tsitsipas has not won any Grand Slam tournament till date but has every chance to do so at the 2023 French Open. The Greek player has climbed to number 3 in the world but has not been able to make a serious push to win a Grand Slam. This should be easier for him at the 2023 French Open as he does have the game to do well on clay.
The 26 year old is coached by Apostolos Tsitsipas and Mark Philippoussis who are confident that Tsitsipas can lift the French Open championship.

Women’s Prediction
Favourite: Iga Świątek (8/11)
It is pretty difficult to look past the current world number one and defending champion Iga Świątek. She is the betting favorite to win back to back French Open championships as the 21 year old has already racked up 3 Grand Slam wins
Świątek has won the French Open in 2020 and 2022 and has shown that she has the game to do well on the red clay of Roland-Garros. One of the things that makes Świątek dangerous is that even though she is so young, she has a loads of experience as she turned pro at 16 and has already won 13 singles titles.
She will enter the 2023 French Open full of confidence from her world number 1 ranking, being the defending champion and knowing that she has the ability to beat any play on clay.
Sleeper Pick: Coco Gauf (14/1)
Coco Gauf surprised a lot of fans when she made it to the 2022 French Open final as not many believed the American could do well on clay. Gauf ended losing to eventual champ Iga Świątek in straight sets but that experience will give her enough confidence this year to know that she can do well at Roland-Garros.
Coco Gauf has not won a Grand Slam yet but knows that she has what it takes to cause a few big upsets at the French Open as the 19 year old is getting better with every Grand Slam and has established herself as one of the future stars in the women’s division.
Long Shot: Jessica Pegula (18/1)
While American Coco Gauf will get a lot of attention at the French Open, keep a watch out for fellow American Jessica Pegula. Pegula and Gauf know each other pretty well as they play doubles together but when it comes to the singles division they will compete fiercely at the 2023 French Open.
The 29 year old Pegula has won two single titles and has reached the number 3 rank in the world in late 2022. She made it to the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open and ended up losing to eventual champ Świątek. She has learnt from her mistakes and her game has improved tremendously in the last 12 months.
