Aryna Sabalenka won the 2023 AU Open women’s singles championship and will look to see if she can repeat her success in 2024 and push to regain the world number 1 ranking from Iga Swiatek.
The prize money for Grand Slam tournaments keeps growing with every year and players will be happy to see that the Australian Open have increased the total prize money from AU$76,500,000 in 2023 to AU$86,500,000 in 2024. This massive AU$10 million increase will see both the men’s and women’s singles champion take home a whopping AU$3.15 million in prize money while the runner-up will settle for AU$1.725 million.
The winner of the doubles event will receive AU$730,000 while the runner-up will get AU$400,000. The winner of the mixed doubles will collect AU$165,000 and the runner-up will get AU$94,000.

Some of the other interesting changes that have been made to the schedule and format of the 2024 Australian Open are as follows:
- This will be the first time in the 114-year history of the Australian Open that it will start on a Sunday
- First round matches which used to take place over 2 days will now be spread across 3 days
- Due to complaints of matches going into the early hours of the morning, the organizers will only schedule 2 instead of 3 matches during daytime sessions
- This will be applicable to all tennis matches taking place at the Margaret Court Arena, Rod Laver Arena and central courts.
- Matches that take place at the John Cain Arena will not see any changes
- With an extra day of competition being added, there will now be a total of 52 game sessions instead of the old 47 game sessions
What Happened Last year
Tennis fans around the world were happy to see Novak Djokovic return to the Australian Open in 2023 after the ugly incident in 2022. For those who don’t remember, Djokovic who isn’t COVID-19 vaccinated arrived in Melbourne to play the 2022 Australian Open but was deported due to his unvaccinated status.
Djokovic received a 3-year ban from travelling to Australia but he appealed his ban and eventually got it lifted. The Australian Open welcomed him in 2023 as COVID-19 rules changed in Australia and the Serb showed up and dominated the tournament once again beating Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets 6–3, 7–6(7–4), 7–6(7–5) to win his 10th Australian Open. Djokovic has won 5 out of the last 6 Australian Open singles championships only missing out in 2022 when he did not play the AU Open.
Aryna Sabalenka had a memorable experience at the 2023 Australian Open as she went on to win her first singles Grand Slam. The Belarussian made it to the final and faced
Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in what turned out to be a tense and highly competitive final. Sabalenka lost the first set 4–6 but then bounced back and went on to win the next two 6–3, 6–4.
Australian Open 2024: Latest Odds
There is no player in the history of the Australian Open that has been more dominant than Novak Djokovic. Djokovic enters the 2024 AU Open with 10 Australian Open championships to his name, that’s four more championships than any other player in the men’s singles division. Roger Federer is the only other player in the modern era who has had similar success at the Australian Open with 6 Grand Slam wins coming at Melbourne Park.
Djokovic who is ranked number 1 in the world will go in as a heavy betting favourite and his main competition will likely come from world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz who is in a different half of the draw. Djokovic will have his work cut out for him at this tournament as he is likely to face a number of top players before he gets to the final. Some of the players in his draw that he might have to get through include Stan Wawrinka, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev who he could play in a potential semi-final clash.
Since Rafael Nadal will not play the 2024 Australian Open, the other player to watch out for in the men’s singles division is Aussie favourite Alex de Minaur.
While Djokovic has a tough draw for this tournament, defending champ in the women’s division Aryna Sabalenka has a much easier draw and does not face any big names till the 4th round. Things will get tougher for Sabalenka as she could end up facing Ons Jabeur in the quarterfinals and then a clash in the semis with American Coco Gauff. Her top competition which comes in the form of Iga Swiatek and 2023 AU Open runner-up Elena Rybakina who are in the other half of the draw.
Swiatek and Rybakina will also be among the top betting favourites to win at the Australian Open. World number 4 Coco Gauff is getting better with every Grand Slam she plays and will definitely be a top contender. Angelique Kerber who is a former world number 1 will make her return after being out of action for nearly 2 years as she took a break to give birth. Whether she will be able to come back and be at her best at the Australian Open is a big question mark!

Mens Prediction
Favourite: Novak Djokovic (1/1)
It’s going to be hard to bet against Djokovic who has been the most dominant champ in Australian Open history. While he does have a pretty challenging draw and given the form that the world number 1 has been in, he looks like he could very well go on to win his 11th Australian Open championship.
The 36 year old Djokovic is getting closer to the end of his career but at the moment it does not look like there are any serious challenges for the Serb at the 2024 Australian Open other than Alcaraz. So, if you want to play it safe, go ahead and bet on Djokovic.
Sleeper pick: Daniil Medvedev (9/1)
Lots of tennis fans believe that if Djokovic does not win the 2024 Australian Open, the player most likely to win will be world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz.
However, don’t forget about Russian Daniil Medvedev who made it to the finals at the 2021 and 2022 Australian Open. He will have to get through Djokovic who is in half of the draw first before reaching the finals, but Medvedev will fancy his chances.
Longshot: Alex De Minaur (33/1)
If you want to take a longshot and see if you get lucky, consider putting your money on Aussie Alex De Minaur who will have the home crowd supporting him and cheering him on.
He is the 10th seed at the tournament but has a very difficult first round match as he is set to play Canadian Milos Raonic who is a former world number 3. If the 24 year old can get past that challenge, he could have a good run at the Australian Open.

Favourite: Iga Świątek (9/4)
Iga Świątek has four grand slam wins to her name but has never won the Australian Open. She enters this tournament as the world number 1 and the betting favourite but the competition will be tough as she does have a tough draw with 2023 Australian Open runner-up Elena Rybakina in her half.
The 22 year old Polish tennis star will have to be on top of her game if she is going to win her first Australian Open title.
Sleeper pick: Coco Gauff (5/1)
Coco Gauff ended up winning the last Grand Slam of 2023 which was the US Open. The 19 year old American is one of the most promising young players in the women’s division and she will come in with a lot of confidence having won her first Grand Slam.
Gauff has shown amazing maturity in her short career so far and will need to keep her composure in big games if she is going to go all the way at the 2024 Australian Open.
Longshot: Jessica Pegula (15/1)
Jessica Pegula is ranked number 5 in the world but has never won a Grand Slam. She did not have a good run at the 2023 US Open and exited in the 4th round. The 29 year old has the game to do well at the Australian Open and also has a pretty good draw that could work in her favour.

Our Predictions
The competition is going to be very close in the men’s draw between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. While Djokovic is the dominant champ, Alcaraz is the younger player who is getting better with each passing year. It looks like Alcaraz will eventually be the player to succeed Djokovic and dominate men’s tennis, but we don’t think he will get it done at the 2024 Australian Open.
If you are playing it safe put your money on Djokovic or if you want to gamble a bit, go ahead and bet on Daniil Medvedev.
