The 2023 Rugby World Cup in France has come to the final stages with the Rugby World Cup final set to take place on Oct 28 at the Stade France in Saint-Denis.
Two of the best teams at the 2023 Rugby World Cup will headline the finals as defending champions South Africa (Springboks) take on New Zealand (All Blacks).
New Zealand made it to the finals after dominating Argentina in the semi-finals which they won 44-6. South Africa faced England who they beat in the 2019 World Cup final and once again the Springboks managed to get the better of England as they won a nail biter 16-15.

The third and probably the most disappointing upset of the tournament was for the hosts France. They beat the All Blacks in their first game of the World Cup and looked in great form. France made it to the quarter-finals and took on South Africa in what turned out to be a nail biter for rugby fans.
South Africa pulled of a brilliant win in the end as they won 29-28 as French fans were gutted to see their team come so close to making it to the semi-finals and then fall short!
Major Surprises
The Wallabies are one of the top teams in World Rugby but they made some strange selections for the World Cup, choosing to go with youth over experience and it cost them dearly. The Wallabies suffered multiple defeats in the group stage, suffering an embarrassing 40-6 loss to Wales and 22-15 loss to Fiji.
The Wallabies failed to make it out of the group stage which was one of the biggest surprises at the World Cup. Another huge surprise was the controversy surrounding Wallabies coach Eddie Jones as rumours surfaced that he had secretly interviewed with Japan for a head coach role which caused unrest amongst the Australian rugby team and their fans.
The only other surprise or controversy at the 2023 Rugby World Cup took place during the England vs. South Africa semi-final game. Springbok Bongi Mbonambi has been accused by England’s Tom Curry of allegedly using a racial slur “White Cunt” against him . The two players refused to shake hands after the game and as of this writing, World Rugby has confirmed it will formally review the alleged incident.

The All Blacks and Springboks have arguably the most intense rivalry in world rugby and the two teams get the perfect setting to showcase their skills at a World Cup final. A lot of criticism was directed against head coach Ian Foster and New Zealand Rugby decided before the World Cup that they would part ways with Foster once the tournament was done. When they lost their first game against France, once again a lot of criticism was directed towards Foster and All Blacks captain Sam Cane who did not play against France as he was out injured.
However, the All Blacks have bounced back after their first loss and have improved with every game showing an intensity that has not only impressed their fans but has also sent a message to the rest of the teams that the All Blacks are once again a force to be reckoned with.
The All Blacks will be playing at full strength and will be led by Sam Cane. While the squad for the World Cup finals is yet to be named, we expect the three Barrett brothers (Beauden, Scott and Jordie) along with their most experienced players such as Sam Whitelock, Brodie Retallick, Ardie Savea, Richie Mo’unga and Aaron Smith to be automatic picks.
The All Blacks are the betting favourites in the final and the key to them winning is going to be their game plan and the changes that Ian Foster brings to the table. The All Blacks lost their opening game to France because they made critical errors in the field, let their emotions get the best of them and committed errors that eventually cost them the game.

Will Jordan has been exceptional for the All Blacks and is the leading try scorer in the tournament. South Africa will look to keep Jordan quiet but that’s not going to be an easy feat.
If the All Blacks play with the intensity they displayed in the last few games, they are going to be hard to stop!

The defending champions will be very pleased to make it to the World Cup finals as they have had a hard road to the finals. The Springboks bounced back hard after suffering a 13-8 defeat to Ireland that lit a fire in their bellies. They just got over the line in their semi-final against England as Handre Pollard got them over the line in the last few minutes of the game by kicking under pressure and helping them win 16-15.
South Africa’s biggest challenge is going to be recovery as they have had two put it all on the line in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. This is probably one of the main reasons why the defending champions are the betting underdogs going into the final. The Springboks will have to raise their intensity yet against and come up with a great game plan in the final to counter the speed of Will Jordan, Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie.
Player to watch: Handrè Pollard
Their kicking game is also going to have to be outstanding as it could very well come down to how well Handrè Pollard performs on the night! He made the difference at the last World Cup Final and will need to rise to the occasion once again against the All Blacks!
South Africa will also need their experienced players to be on top of their game as the Springboks rely heavily on Eben Etzebeth, Captain Siya Kolis and Faf de Klerk to set the intensity levels for the rest of the team.
Prediction
While on paper both the Springboks and All Blacks come across as equally matched, there are two factors that we need to consider carefully. The Springboks played in the second semi-final which means that they have 24 hours less to recover for the finals that the All-Blacks.
Given the length and intensity of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, those 24 hours of recovery could make a big difference in the end. The second factor to consider is that the All Blacks have had a relatively easier road to the finals than the Springboks. The All Blacks beat Ireland 28-24 in the quarter-finals and beat Argentina 44-6 in the semi-finals.
The Springboks had a very tough quarter-final against France which they won 29-28 and another tough semi-final against England which they won 16-15. These two games have taken a lot out of the Springboks both physically and mentally and that gives the All Blacks an edge.
We expect this to be a close game in the first half but we expect the All Blacks to start to pull away during the second half as we feel it’s going to be difficult for the Springboks to continue to maintain the same intensity through the game.
