The 2023 Rugby World Cup is currently going on in France and rugby fans from all over the world are glued in as we are now down to the semi-finals. The four semi-finalists are New Zealand, defending champions South Africa, Argentina and England.

Australia played extremely poorly at the World Cup winning just 2 out of their 4 games that eventually led to their elimination in the group stage.

Australian Fans Still Livid With Wallabies Performance

Wallabies fans were left frustrated and disappointed not just by how badly their team played but also due to the controversies surrounding head coach Eddie Jones who was sacked as head coach of England before taking up the head coach role with Australia in Jan 2023.

Jones made some controversial decisions in his selection for the Wallabies squad as he decided to take a very young squad to the World Cup. In the lead-up to the World Cup, there was also rumours that Jones had already opened talks with Japan on a potential role as head coach.

Jones refused to deny or confirm this rumour when asked about it and it did not sit well with the Australian fans or ex-Wallabies players. There was pressure put on Rugby Australia to sack Jones based on the team’s poor performance in France but Jones wasn’t given the boot.

Committed To Staying With Australia For Next World Cup

Jones faced the media on 16 Oct and finally clarified quite a few questions including his potential switch over to Japan. Jones claims he hasn’t spoken to anyone about a potential job opportunity and reaffirmed his commitment to Australia stating that he is focused on leading the team to the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

In a statement, Jones said

The results in the World Cup weren’t what we hoped, but I still think we made the right decisions there. Obviously the results were disappointing. Everyone is gutted by it. But I stand by the decisions I made and I think Australian Rugby is in a better positionIf we can fix these issues, we’ve got a rosy future.
