Last Year

Stefanos Tsitsipas is the defending singles champion after he won his first Nitto ATP Finals last year. He edged out Dominic Thiem with 6–7(6–8), 6–2, 7–6(7–4) in the grand finals after he dealt with Roger Federer (6–3, 6–4) in the semis. Meanwhile, the defending doubles champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut are not in the field this year, leaving the doors wide open for Nitto ATP Finals to crown the new doubles champions at the end of November.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for all sports organizers to host events with a live audience, and the Nitto ATP Finals is no exception. As announced in August, the finals tournament will be held without spectators in accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines in the United Kingdom.

Now let’s take a look at who are the main favorites to win the 2020 ATP Finals and which players/duos are worth considering as a longshot bet.

* Odds have been provided by 888Sport and are accurate as of 12/11/2019

Singles

Favorite: Novak Djoković

Novak Djoković enters the 2020 ATP Finals after equalling Pete Sampras’ record for the most ATP seasons finished as the top-rated player. The Serb has had quite an illustrious career, which earned him 11,630 points on the ATP Rankings, 2,180 ahead of Nadal, and 3,305 ahead of Dominic Thiem.

Djoković has won the Australian Open to which he added another victory in Dubai before the five-month hiatus. Upon returning to the court, Djoković looked set to win the US Open but ended up disqualified in the fourth round after hitting the line judge with a ball.

Djoković responded to his controversial departure from the US Open by winning his fifth Italian Open title before losing the French Open against Nadal. Despite his lack of success in France, Djoković is still the man to watch in the United Kingdom as he looks towards his sixth Nitto ATP Finals title and his first since 2015.

Odds to win: 2.25

Second Favorite: Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal has qualified for the ATP Finals in each of the last 15 years but has never managed to hoist the trophy. The closest Nadal has come to winning the ATP Finals was in 2010 and 2013 when he finished as runner-up.

His road to the ATP Finals title is rather unfortunate, considering injuries forced Nadal out of the race on more than one occasion (2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018). Last year, he had a strong start of the tournament but had to his journey in the group stage, where he locked in a 2-1 record.

Nadal is entering the 2020 ATP Finals ranked second on the ATP Rankings with 9,450 points. Although he had a few issues with injuries and decided to withdraw from the US Open due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Nadal proved he still got by reaching the quarters of the Italian Open and later winning his 13th French Open title where he did not drop a single set against Novak Djoković.

Odds to win: 6.00

Longshot: Daniil Medvedev

Daniil Medvedev warmed up for the ATP Finals with a phenomenal display at Paris Masters, where he defeated Alexander Zverev with 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to win his first title of the year. Due to his success in Paris, Medvedev overtook Roger Federer for no.4 spot in the ATP Rankings. However, he is still far off the leading trio in Thiem, Nadal, and Djokovic.

Even though the 24-year-old hasn’t had as impressive a season as he did in 2019, the Russian has shown he can go toe-to-toe with the best tennis players in the world, and he will look to prove that in his second ATP Finals appearance. Last year he lost all three of his group stage matches but has publicly stated that he feels better prepared to make a splash this year.

There is a reason why Daniil Medvedev is priced at higher odds than some of his competitors, but we shouldn’t discount the underdogs, considering the ATP Finals title has gone to the outsiders in all of the past three years. What’s more, the “Big Three” did not make it to the finals last year and 2017.

Odds to Win: 6.00

Doubles

Favorite: Mate Pavić/Bruno Soares

Mate Pavić and Bruno Soares were the first two players to qualify for the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals and are entering the event as the top-seeded duo in the ATP Rankings with 3,385 points.

The Croatian-Brazilian duo started the year with a title from Open Sud de France, to which they added a US Open doubles title in September. Even though they did not win another silverware since then, Pavić and Soares did not fail to impress with runner-up finishes at the French Open and the Paris Masters.

Second Favorite: Rajeev Ram/Joe Salisbury

Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury are entering the 2020 Nitto ATP Finals as the second-seeded duo on the ATP Rankings with 3,350 points. They have attended nine tournaments together in 2020 and won the Australian Open, where they bested the crowd’s favorites Max Purcell and Luke Saville with 6–4, 6–2.

Outside of that, Ram and Salisbury also made it to the semi-finals of the 2020 Western & Southern Open, 2020 US Open, and 2020 Adelaide International. Adding to that, they also reached the quarter-finals of the 2020 French Open and the semi-finals of the 2020 US Open, 2020 Erste Bank Open, and 2020 Dubai Tennis Championships.

Longshot: Marcel Granollers/Horacio Zeballos

The Spanish-Argentinian duo are ranked fourth on the ATP Rankings. However, that does not necessarily mean they should be ignored as a longshot bet for the ATP Finals.

Granollers and Zeballos had quite a successful season with three titles from the Italian Open, Rio Open, and Argentina Open. While they did not achieve anything remarkable at the French Open and the Australian Open, where they had to settle for a round 16 finish, it’s hard to be overly critical of their showings since they got eliminated by the Murray/Skupski and Ram/Salisbury duos respectively.

Granollers and Zeballos also made it to the finals of the 2020 Generali Open Kitzbühel. They reached the quarter-finals of the 2020 Western & Southern Open, where they got outperformed by Ram and Salisbury with 5-7 and 6-7 (8-10).

It seems like the Ram and Salisbury are the main threat for Granollers, and Zeballos give that the US-UK duo has consistently outperformed them. At the same time, we must consider that Granollers and Zeballos tend to do well against the no.1 seeded Pavić/Soares.

Our Prediction

Even though it was the underdogs who have impressed the most in the recent iterations of ATP Finals, it’s still tough to bet against Novak Djoković. The Serbian tennis player has been phenomenal this season. While there is a world where either of the remaining seven players can win, it seems very unlikely any of them will be viewed as the favorite when facing him.

Djoković has won the Australian Open, made it to the finals of the French Open, and looked set to win the US Open, which he arguably would have had he not been disqualified.

Nevertheless, the ATP Finals will be a perfect opportunity for redemption, and we can be sure Djoković will grab this opportunity with both hands.

When it comes to the doubles, predicting the winner becomes much tougher. Even though Mate Pavić and Bruno Soares have impressed the most this season, they are beatable – as proven by Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos.

What makes betting on the underdog doubles even more appealing, however, is the fact that no top-seeded duo have won the ATP Finals since Bob and Mike Bryan in 2014. Since then, the title belonged to the second-seeded (2015, 2017), fifth-seeded (2016, 2018), and eight-seeded (2019) pairs.
