Vuelta a EspañaLa Vuelta a España is set to begin later this month, and is one of cycling’s Grand Tours along with the Tour de France and Giro d’ Italia. La Vuelta a España was first ran in 1935, and became a yearly event since the 1955. This is multi-stage race that attracts some of the top cyclists in the sport each year. This race was originally just ran with Spanish cyclists, but has now been opened up to cyclists from all over the world.

La Vuelta a España has changed in format several times throughout the years, but it is currently a 21-stage event that is ran over a span of 23 days. Each stage is a separate timed event, and the times are then added up for all drivers to determine the top cyclist. Cyclists To Watch Out For

Let’s take a look at three of the top cyclists to watch out for in this event, along with a dark horse pick with Intertops.

Primoz Roglic

Primoz Roglic

Roglic comes into this event as the betting favourite, and it’s not hard to figure out why. The Slovenian cyclist had a pair of Tour wins a season ago, and also finished in fourth place at the Tour de France.

He finished in third place earlier this season at the Giro d’ Italia, and has plenty of momentum.

Odds to win: 2.90

Miguel Ángel López

Miguel Ángel López

Lopez is one of the youngest cyclists in the field, but he is also one of the most talented.

Miguel Ángel López finished in 8th place at this event in 2017, and then finished in third place a year ago.

Lopez clearly feels comfortable at the Vuelta a España, and will be a driver to watch out for.

Odds to win: 4.00

Richard Carapaz

Richard Carapaz

Richard Carapaz has been extremely impressive in his two entries at Giro d’ Italia, and he is hoping for the same kind of success in Spain.

Carapaz was the winner of the 2019 Giro d’ Italia earlier this season, and has the attention of the other cyclists in the field.

Odds to win: 4.50

Dark Horse Pick: Sergio Higuita

Sergio HiguitaSergio Higuita is our pick for “dark horse” to win this years event. He is originally from Colombia and rides for the “EF Education First”.

He has had a very successful 2019 so far placing 2nd in the Tour of California and 3rd in the GP Miguel Indurain.

While also placing 3-7 in a number of other events. His odds are a distant 22/1 to win this event but look for Sergio to be near the front when the race ends.

Odds to win: 34.00

Selected Odds

Alejandro Valverde (15.00)
Nairo Quintana (17.00)
Rafal Majka (23.00)
Johan Esteban Chaves (34.00)
Tadej Pogacar (41.00)
Rigoberto Uran (41.00)

Our Pick

There are several talented cyclists in this field, and there are several factors that could affect who is the eventual champion. All of the top cyclists in the world will be headed to Spain this month, and it is going to be an exciting event. We are going to go with Miguel Angel Lopez at +300 to win the 2019 Vuelta a España.
