La Vuelta a España is set to begin later this month, and is one of cycling’s Grand Tours along with the Tour de France and Giro d’ Italia. La Vuelta a España was first ran in 1935, and became a yearly event since the 1955. This is multi-stage race that attracts some of the top cyclists in the sport each year. This race was originally just ran with Spanish cyclists, but has now been opened up to cyclists from all over the world.
La Vuelta a España has changed in format several times throughout the years, but it is currently a 21-stage event that is ran over a span of 23 days. Each stage is a separate timed event, and the times are then added up for all drivers to determine the top cyclist. The current leader gets the honour of donning the red jersey, and gives the other cyclists an idea of who they are chasing.

Spain is the most successful country in this event with 41 total wins. Roberto Heras is the most decorated cyclist in this event, having won La Vuelta a España a total of four times. The total distance for this prestigious race is 3,272.2 kilometers. The race kicks off on August 24, and will conclude on September 15.
