The Open Championship 2023 will return to the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, Merseyside, England. The last time the tournament took place at Royal Liverpool Golf Club was back in 2014 when Rory McIlroy went on to win the Championship!
This will be the 13th time that the Royal Liverpool Golf Club will play host to the Open Championship and it will be the 151st Open Championship to take place officially.
We must point out that in the history of the competition, only on three occasions has an amateur golfer won The Open and two of those amateur golfers (Harold Hilton and John Ball) were Hoylake members. Most golf fans will not be familiar with those names as Hilton won it back in 1897 and Ball did so in 1930.
The prize money for The Open has gone up to $16.5 million which is an increase of $2.5 million from last year. Cam Smith who won The Open last year took home a cheque of $2.5 million but the 2023 Open Championship winner will take home an extra $500,000, bringing the total amount to $3 million.
The Open Championship will be shown on Sky Sports while the Open website will provide coverage of groups. Those who like to listen on Radio can tune into BBC Radio 5 Live for full coverage of the tournament.

The Open Championship 2022 was a special occasion as it celebrated the 150th Open which took place at St Andrews Golf Club, St Andrews, Scotland. The tournament ran from July 14 to 17 and $14 million in prize money was given away.
Australian Cameron Smith put in an impressive performance in the final round to win the 2022 Open Championship with a fantastic eight under 64. He got the better of Cameron Young, his playing partner by one and was two ahead of Rory McIlroy to lift the Championship.
Cam Smith broke a number of records including finishing with a 20 under par score to have the best joint score to par in the history of the Open. He is now tied with Henrik Stenson who won the Royal Troon in 2016. Cam Smith also holds the record for the lowest score at St. Andrews.

The bookmakers are backing Rory McIlroy to replicate his 2014 success at St. Andrews and win The Open 2023 especially after winning the Scottish Open last week .
The Irish golfer is ranked in 2nd place on the Official World Golf Ranking and is considered by many of be one of the best modern golfers in the world, having held on to the number 1 ranking spot for over 100 weeks.
Given his performance at the 2022 Open when he finished 3rd and the fact that he has enjoyed success at St. Andrews in the past, he is definitely a player to watch out for!

Scottie Scheffler
American Scottie Scheffler is among the top three betting favorites as the current ranked world number 1 golfer has held on to the position now for over 41 weeks. The 27 year old won the 2022 Masters Tournament and will be looking to establish himself at St. Andrews and lift the Open Championship.
Scheffler hasn’t done too bad for himself in recent tournaments finishing in 3rd place at the 2023 Memorial Tournament, 2023 U.S Open and in 4th place at the Travelers Championship. His biggest competition is likely to be Cam Smith and Rory McIlroy.

Cam Smith
Cam Smith will be looking to defend his 2022 Open Championship but and is amongst the top 5 betting favorites. The Aussie had a great run last year winning the 2022 Players Championship and now has 5 tournament wins on the PGA tour.
Smith is ranked in 7th place on the Official World Golf Ranking but don’t let the 7th place ranking fool you in not backing Smith. Smith hasn’t played as much as other golfers since he switched to the LIV Golf Tour. He recently won the LIV Golf Invitational London held at the Centurion Club in July.

Dark Horse: Shane Lowry
If you don’t want to back the betting favorites but prefer putting your money on a dark horse, then consider backing Shane Lowry.
He hasn’t played as well as he would have liked in 2023 and currently sits in 29th place on the Official World Golf Ranking.
However, the 2019 Open Championship winner can pull off a major upset at the Open Championship at St.Andrews.
