Washington won 93 games this season to earn the top Wild Card spot in the National League. The Nationals have been the best team in baseball since mid-May, and come into this series with plenty of momentum. The Nationals stunned the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, and then swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Championship Series.

Washington Nationals

The Washington Nationals starting rotation was absolutely dominant in the NLCS against the Cardinals, and they will need to be great again. Max Scherzer will likely make the game one start in this series, but the Nationals have three other talented starters in Stephen Strasburg, Anibal Sanchez and Patrick Corbin. These four pitchers held the St. Louis Cardinals to a batting average of less than .180 in the NLCS, but things will be much tougher in this series. Houston will do a much better job of working the count against the starters, but Washington has the ability to pile up plenty of strikeouts.

Howie Kendrick was named the NLCS MVP after a solid performance against the Cardinals, and he leads the team with nine runs batted in during these playoffs. Anthony Rendon has been the leader of this offense all season long, and he is hitting .375 so far in this postseason. The Nationals don’t have the same firepower as the Astros, but they can score runs as well.

Current Odds: +180

Houston Astros

Starting pitcher Gerrit Cole will be on the mound for the Astros in game one of this series, and he could make three starts in this series. Cole has been the best pitcher in baseball over the last few months, and has won 18 straight decisions. Backing up Cole will be the very talented Justin Verlander, who has the ability to shut down an opponent as well. Houston really only has two dominant starting pitchers, but their bullpen has been lights out so far in these playoffs. The Astros were able to win a bullpen game against the Yankees in game six, and they have plenty of flamethrowers in their bullpen.

The Houston Astros have one of the most feared lineups in all of baseball, and they can score in a variety of ways. The Astros have blasted 14 home runs already this season, with Jose Altuve leading the team with five long balls. Altuve also leads the team with a .349 batting average, while Alex Bregman is getting on base at a .435 clip. This Astros lineup is deep, and they make things very difficult for opposing starting pitchers.

Current Odds: -220

Our Prediction

Washington should have a ton of momentum heading into this series, but they are also coming off of a long break. The Nationals were able to sweep the Cardinals in the NLCS on the strength of their starting pitching, but their offense will have to show up in this series. There aren’t many flaws with this Houston Astros team, and they have the pitching to matchup with the Washington Nationals. The Astros were the best team in baseball during the regular season for a reason, and it’s hard to see them losing this series.

Bet the Houston Astros -220 over the Washington Nationals in the 2019 MLB World Series.
