The start of the National Football League preseason begins with the annual Hall of Fame Game. The 2019 Hall of Fame Game will take place on Thursday, August 1 from Canton, Ohio.
The Atlanta Falcons and Denver Broncos will kick off the preseason schedule, and each coach will get an early look at their roster. These are two very proud NFL franchises that have both been in the Super Bowl in the last few years.
The first ever Hall of Fame Game was played on August 11, 1962 and featured the New York Giants and St. Louis Cardinals playing to a 21-21 tie. The game has been played almost every year since, but there have been a few exceptions.
The timing of the Hall of Fame Game has changed a few different times throughout the years, but has been played in the month of August since 2002. Both the Falcons and Broncos will be making their fourth ever appearance in the Hall of Fame Game, and each team has gone just 1-2. Atlanta and Denver have played 14 games against each other all-time, and the Broncos hold a slim 8-6 lead in these matchups.

The Denver Broncos are -2.5 point favourites over the Atlanta Falcons in this game, but the odds suggest that this will be a tight battle. Betting the Broncos on the moneyline is at -135, while the Falcons are at +115. The over/under for total number of points is set at 34.0. It’s really hard to get a good feel on the best bets for this game, but taking a closer look at each team could help determine which way to go.
Denver Broncos
Current Odds: -135
The Denver Broncos went just 6-10 a season ago and finished in third place in the AFC West. Scoring points was a big issue for Denver, and they ranked 24th out of 32 teams with 20.6 points per game. The Broncos were right around league average in both passing and rushing yards per game, but they just couldn’t find the end zone enough.
Denver will have a new coach this season, Vic Fangio, but there might be more pressure on the offensive coordinators and coaches this season.
Player to Watch: Joe Flacco
Joe Flacco will be under center for the Broncos when they begin the season, and there will be a ton of pressure on the veteran QB. Flacco lost his starting job in Baltimore, but has a reputation of being a top-tier quarterback in the league.
Flacco led the Ravens to a Super Bowl during his tenure, and Denver is hoping for the same type of thing this season.
Atlanta Falcons
Current Odds: +115
Atlanta was in the Super Bowl just a few seasons ago, but things haven’t gone well since. The Falcons finished the 2018 season with a record of 7-9, and were stuck at home watching the playoffs. The Falcons were a top-10 offense, scoring 25.9 points per game, but their defense really let them down. Atlanta is in a winnable division, but they have some work to do.
Player to Watch: Julio Jones
Julio Jones reported to training camp on time despite still looking for a new long-term deal.
Jones has been one of the top wide receivers in the NFL over the last few seasons, but injuries are starting to pile up.
A healthy Jones will make the Atlanta Falcons offense one of the tops in the league.
Our Pick
It’s always hard to make a prediction on the first NFL preseason game, but we are going to go with the Broncos -2.5 in this game. Denver will have a new head coach, and that roster will be full of players trying to make a good first impression. We also live the OVER 34.0 points as there won’t be a lot of defense played in this game.
