  • A Virginia Senate committee voted 9-3 in favor of advancing a Tysons casino bill.
  • The bill would give the green light for a Las Vegas-style casino resort to be built near Tysons Corner Center and Metro’s Silver Line.
  • The legislation is awaiting further review.

On Wednesday, the Senate committee in Virginia took a significant step, voting 9-3 to send forward the Tysons casino bill. Senator Adam Ebbin, D-Alexandria, was the only one who abstained.

If given the green light, the proposed legislation would allow construction work on a Las Vegas-style casino resort near Tysons Corner Center and Metro’s Silver Line to begin.

Strong Support So Far

Senate Bill 982 has consistently garnered strong support, clearing subcommittee and committee votes by margins of two-thirds or greater.

Provided the bill will receive the same amount of support, the measure could gather a sufficient number of votes to be enacted over a veto or to override vetoes.

Some of the arguments used by proponents refer to the potential of generating hundreds of millions in tax revenue, which could, in turn, help ease the burden of real estate taxes for local residents.

The casino project that would create thousands of new jobs has gained the support of labor unions.

Opponents to Deliver 5,000 Letters to the Loudoun Board of Supervisors

As expected, opposition to the project has also been vocal. At the start of the week, a Senate subcommittee meeting on the bill drew dozens of Fairfax County residents wearing red “No Tysons Casino” T-shirts.

Opponents expressed concerns about potential issues the casino could attract, including increased crime, traffic congestion, and safety risks.

This casino bill is designed to benefit private interests, not the Fairfax County community, Oppose the bill.

Meanwhile, a group of Loudoun County residents plans to deliver over 5,000 letters opposing the casino to the Loudoun Board of Supervisors.

While this particular board does not have any sort of jurisdiction over the US casino project, those who oppose it believe their concerns would resonate with state legislators.

Supporters of the casino emphasize its potential to revitalize the area and provide significant economic benefits.

Nonetheless, critics remain firm in their belief that the project would prioritize corporate profits over the local community’s well-being.

The Tysons casino bill now heads to another committee for further review next week.
