Novak Djokovic has stayed relatively quiet after he was deported from Australia in January 2022 due to his refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccination.

Australia like some countries who have not come to terms with COVID-19 have made it mandatory for visitors to be double vaccinated in order to enter the country.

Djokovic got a medical exemption and was looking forward to playing the 2022 Australia Open where he was the defending champion but Australia decided to revoke his visa, medical exemption and deport him as they feared his anti-vaccination stance would stir up other anti-vaxxers in Australia and cause trouble for the government.

Djokovic recently sat down with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and opened up on his views regarding the COVID-19 vaccine, his future plans and whether he would play the 2022 French Open.

The Serb made it clear that he was not an anti-vaxxer but just someone who does not think the current set of COVID-19 vaccines are safe enough to inject into his body. He confirmed that he had not received any COVID-19 vaccine so far and had no plans to take them in the near future.

Djokovic acknowledged that his absence from the 2022 Australian Open made it easier for his rival Rafael Nadal to win the championship and create a new record of winning 21 Grand Slam tournaments. Prior to Nadal’s win, Djokovic, Nadal and Roger Federer were all tied on 20 grand slam wins.

With the French Open currently needing a ‘vaccine passport’ to enter the stadium, it looks like Djokovic may be missing another grand slam tournament, paving the way for Nadal to win his 22nd grand slam tournament. Though this could change as France are easing COVID-19 restrictions as they start to come out of ‘Omicron’ variant and begin to ‘live with the virus‘.

Djokovic Willing To Sacrifice His Career

Djokovic acknowledged the fact that all grand slam tournaments could soon make it mandatory for players to be fully vaccinated. There is also a strong possibility that most if not all ATP events could follow through with the mandatory vaccination requirement for all players.

Djokovic said he had come to terms with the fact that he may not be playing any grand slams in the near future due to his stance but said he was willing to sacrifice his career as no grand slam was worth shoving things into his body that he did not agree with!
