Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez was pulled up for testing positive for clenbuterol on March 4 and there were rumours that he could be pulled from his fight against Gennady Golovkin (GGG) which is scheduled to take place on May 5 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
However, it appears that the fight will go on as per schedule as Canelo’s team has claimed that tainted meat in Mexico was responsible for traces of clenbuterol.
When the news broke on March 4, GGG stayed rather quiet and was very respectful. All that changed this week, when GGG labelled Canelo as a long time cheat and also lashed out at the Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) for protecting Canelo. The two fighters fought in 2017 for the first time and the boxing officials declared it as a draw, although many believed it was GGG that won the fight.
In a statement, GGG said
Before the first fight, I knew he was not clean. Have a look at the video. He used some pills. It was pretty obvious when his muscles were all with traces of injections. I’ve known it for a long time. Looking at the commission, they all put their head down to avoid the eye contact. They don’t want to watch. I reviewed the fight again and I just realized that these people, people like that, are terrorists, they are killing the sport.

GGG Wants Canelo To Take A Lie Detector Test
GGG also went after Oscar De La Hoya who is Canelo’s promoter and said De La Hoya also used PEDs during his career. The 35 year old Kazakhstan fighter said that he did not buy into the argument that it was contaminated meet that was responsible for traces of clenbuterol.
GGG said that Canelo is an experienced boxer and it is certainly not contaminated meat that is responsible for him testing positive.
GGG said that if Canelo wanted to really clear his name and prove that he is a clean fighter, he should subject himself to a lie detector test. Canelo’s team have denied all of the allegations and claimed that Canelo has always been a clean fighter and the stats prove that.
An investigation is currently being carried out into Canelo’s positive drug test and Canelo’s team believes that the results will clear everything up. However GGG is not buying into that side of the story and claims that corrupt officials and boxers should be put in prison.
