  • MLB and MLBA still at loggerheads after three months
  • MLB calls for federal mediator to step in and solve dispute
  • MLBA needs to agree for federal mediator to get involved

Baseball fans have not had any action for the last three months as the dispute between Major League Baseball (MLB) and the MLB Players Association (MLBPA) could not be mutually solved and as a result the MLB put an end to all games from Dec 2, 2021.

It’s now been just over 3 months since all games in the MLB have come to an halt and it does not look like the MLB is going to get back to business anytime soon.

During the last 90 days, the MLB and the MLBPA who previously rejected the idea of a delayed season have met on four separate occasions in order to sort out their differences and see if they can come to a mutual agreement.

However things have not worked out for both parties as even after four meetings, they were unable to reach an agreement which has resulted in a stalemate between both parties. The two parties are trying to work out the next collective bargaining agreement but are unable to agree on the overall terms and conditions.

MLB Calls For Federal Mediator

MLB brass decided that it is no point continuing to play a waiting game and wait for a fifth meeting with the MLBPA and have another stalemate. The way things stand; it looks like both sides will not be able to find a solution by themselves. This is one of the reasons why the MLB has now called for a federal mediator to step in and help both sides work out an agreement.

A federal mediator is a third party that will look to mediate on behalf of both parties. For a federal mediator to be involved the MLBPA needs to sign-off and as of this writing, the MLBA has not offered an answer. The Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service will be responsible for providing a mediator in case the MLBPA does agree.

Federal mediators have helped sporting leagues in the past to work out their differences. Three instances that federal mediators have stepped in and worked out an agreement include the lockout in the NBA in 2011, in the NFL in 2011 and the NHL in 2012-2013. We will have to wait and see what the MLBPA decides!
