  • Boris Becker secures release from UK prison quite quickly
  • Becker served 8 out of his 30 month prison sentence
  • The tennis great is now facing deportation to Germany

Tennis fans around the world were shocked earlier this year when news broke that tennis great Boris Becker was arrested in the UK and sent to prison. Becker was one of the most loved tennis players during his time as he shot to fame when he became the youngest player (17) years to win Wimbledon in 1985.

Becker went on become the number one ranked player in the world and went on to win 5 more grand slams before retiring. The German tennis pro moved to the UK in 2012 and was still involved with tennis to a certain extent via coaching and a commentary stint at Wimbledon.

Becker Jailed For Financial Violations

Becker who is alleged to have made over $47 million during the course of his career surprised many in the tennis world when he filed for bankruptcy earlier this year. He is alleged to have taken a $5 million loan in 2013 from a private bank and another $1.6 million personal loan from a British entrepreneur.

When he could not repay the loans he filed for bankruptcy but is alleged to have hid financial assets and transferred huge sums of money even after declaring bankruptcy. Legal charges were filed against Becker and a Southwark Crown Court in London convicted him of four charges and sentenced him to 2.5 years in prison.

The four charges that Becker was convicted of were under the Insolvency Act and were based on two counts of failing to disclose estate, concealing debt and removal of property.

Becker Released After Just 8 Months

The 55 year old has now been released from prison after serving just 8 months out of his 30 month prison sentence. In general, most prisoners with these charges will need to serve a minimum of 15 months before being eligible for release.

Becker’s release came early because he will no longer be allowed to remain in the UK. Becker has been deported to his home country of Germany and has already left the UK.

While Becker will be happy to be out of prison, his prison time could hurt his media gigs as a lot of media companies don’t want to face flak for hiring the jailed tennis ace.
