FIFA World CupThe Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) is looking to change the frequency of staging the FIFA World Cup. Held once every four years, FIFA is now looking to make this a biennial World Cup.

FIFA plans to hold an online conference with football associations around the world to discuss these new plans and to sort out their international calendars going forward.

The biennial World Cup would be expected to start from 2028 in order to boost the popularity of the beautiful game and give fans more of what they want every 2 years instead of 4 years. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is not very pleased with the proposal from FIFA.

UEFA said they were disappointed with these plans and had written to FIFA on Sep 14 to open discussions on the newly proposed biennial World Cup but was yet to get a reply.

Arsene Wenger, ex- manager for Arsenal who is currently the global development chief for FIFA is the one pushing for a biennial World Cup. FIFA started discussing the potential of staging a World Cup every two years in May 2021 and reported that it had discussed these plans with member associations but based on UEFA’s remarks, it appears there is miscommunication somewhere.

UEFA is objecting to the biennial World Cup as it feels it will cause more problems for global football. There were four specific areas of concern that UEFA raised.

Four Areas Of Concern

UEFA pointed out that football fans look forward to the biggest football event in the world every four years and the anticipation is one of the reasons why the World Cup is so popular and successful. By changing the frequency to once in every two years, the excitement and anticipation will diminish which is not good for the game.

The second reason is that football players will be under a lot more stress with a biennial World Cup format. Even though FIFA plans on reducing the number of World Cup games, players will have lesser timeframes to recover which will in turn increase the chances of serious injury.

The third reason is that the quality of football in smaller nations will drop as they will struggle to qualify for big tournaments like the World Cup and finally by hosting a biennial World Cup for the men, it will pose a hindrance to the development of women’s football.
