Summary:
- The US continued its domination over the Presidents Cup with a new victory in Montreal.
- The team won the 2024 Presidents Cup with help from Keegan Bradley who scored the clinching point and defeated Si Woo Kim.
- This is the United States’ 13th title out of 15 possible cups.
The United States continued its impressive run of success at the Presidents Cup, claiming an 18½ to 11½ victory over the International Team at Royal Montreal Golf Club.
With this win, the U.S. has now captured 13 of the 15 Presidents Cups since the event’s inception in 1994, solidifying its dominance in the competition.
Xander Schauffele set the tone for Team USA on Sunday with a commanding 4&3 victory over former World No. 1 Jason Day in singles play.
Schauffele, who finished the week with a 4-1-0 record, quickly turned a 1 Up deficit into a 5 Up lead at the turn after he won five consecutive holes after tying the match on the fourth.
His victory was just the beginning of yet another glorious day for the Americans who steadily dismantled their opposition.
Keegan Bradley, tabbed captain of the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup team in an unexpected move by the PGA of America this July after being left off last year’s squad, was the one who offered the clinching point when he outlasted Si Woo Kim in a 1 Up victory on the 18th hole.
Reflecting on the moment, Bradley was emotional:
That was incredible. I was saying all week I didn’t know if I’d ever get to do this again
The six-time PGA TOUR winner who played in two Ryder Cups and one Presidents Cup further added that if this would be his “last round as a player”, he would be “happy with that“, reminiscing of the last time when he played and “was the point to lose the Ryder Cup”.
The United States entered the final day with a solid 11-7 lead, built on a dominant five-match sweep on Thursday and strong performances throughout the week.
Missing just 4½ points to bag the Cup, the US team wasted no time and delivered consistent performances across the board.
Along with Schauffele, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay were also seen shining brightly, each of them ending the week with impressive 4-1-0 records.
International Team Put Up a Decent Fight
Despite the lopsided scoreline, the International Team showed a fight with Hideki Matsuyama striking a blow and winning 1 Up against world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Corey Conners taking down Tony Finau 5&3.
Nonetheless, the US proved too strong, with Russell Henley securing a 3&2 win over Sungjae Im, and Cantlay defeating Taylor Pendrith 3&1 to bring the squad to the brink of victory.
In a tightly contested final match, Bradley clinched the win for Team USA, with Wyndham Clark, Sahith Theegala, and Morikawa also closing out key matches.
Despite spirited efforts from the International side, including victories from Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Min Woo Lee, the Americans’ depth and consistency ultimately proved decisive.
Team US’ Sahith Theegala commented on the intensity of the event both in the morning and the evening, when
every shot felt like it meant the world, and it did.
The 26-year-old born in Orange, California also praised the International Team’s “talented guys”.
Wyndham Clark, sixth in PGA Tour, called it “really fun” to be able to summon all the energy they usually use “to try to beat each other” into a “try to beat someone else” type of scenario, It’s really refreshing for golf, too.”, Clark added.
Mackenzie Hughes of Dundas, Ontario, a rookie of the elite biennial men’s golf tournament, commented on the International Team’s loss, saying “the result stinks, but man, the memories that we made“.
The 33-year-old added that the feelings they experienced on the golf course will be something he will think about “for a long time“.
Since the inception of the event, the International Team has scored a single victory in 1998, and tied once in 2003. The next competition will take place in 2026 at the Medinah Golf Club near Chicago.
