  • Players put pressure on the PGA Tour to appoint Tiger Woods as a Player Director
  • PGA Tour yielded to that pressure and appointed Woods as the 6th player director
  • PGA is also set to make big changes to its governance structure

The PGA Tour has received massive criticism from its players after it made a surprise announcement and confirmed that it was merging with its rival-league, the LIV Golf Tour which was owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

Players raised multiple complaints against the PGA Tour for not being transparent with them and pushed for the PGA Tour to appoint Tiger Woods as a new player director.

PGA Tour Appoints Tiger Woods As Player Director

The PGA Tour is also set to make big changes to its governance structure based on player complaints and feedback. The golf players want the PGA Tour to work with its Player Directors before making and finalizing any policy and commissioner Jay Monahan appears to be in agreement as of now.

The PGA Tour decided it was in the best interests of the players and the sport to appoint Woods as their 6th player director after getting a letter from over 40 players asking the PGA Tour to get players involved more when making new policies and changes to existing ones. One of their demands was to appoint Tiger Woods, who is a 15 time major champion as a player director.

The PGA Tour gave into that request and released a statement which said

Player leaders joined together to uphold the Tour’s core principles and ask that certain steps be taken immediately, and Monahan has agreed to support the players and their requests. Accordingly, the player directors will have full transparency and the authority to approve — or to decline to approve — any potential changes to the Tour as part of the framework agreement discussions.

Tiger Woods Happy To Represent Players

The 47 year old Woods who is not a stranger to controversy especially in his personal life, is near the end of his legendary career, still wants to be actively involved with the PGA Tour and this new role will help him do just that.

In a statement, Woods said

I am honored to represent the players of the PGA Tour. This is a critical point for the Tour, and the players will do their best to make certain that any changes that are made in Tour operations are in the best interest of all Tour stakeholders, including fans, sponsors and players
