  • Serena says she is uncertain about her future in the sport

Wimbledon fans were excited when they heard that former world number 1 and tennis great Serena Williams was granted a wildcard entry to play at SW19. Serena was forced to drop out of Wimbledon 2021 after being injured on court and was returning to the circuit a year later.

Serena Williams Eliminated In R1

Serena had very little match practice coming into Wimbledon as she warmed up on the grass courts by teaming up with Ons Jabeur to play at Eastbourne but their journey was cut shot after Jabeur was injured.

Serena was set to face Frenchwoman Harmony Tan in the first round at Wimbledon. Even the most ardent Serena Williams fans did not expect her to win the 2022 Wimbledon championship but they did expect Serena to get past the 115th ranked Tan and progress to round 2. However, it wasn’t to be as Tan played a fantastic game and eliminated Serena 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7).

Tan put Serena under pressure after winning the first set but Serena bounced back in style and played excellent tennis in the second set to run away with it. The third test was a closely contested set that sent into a tie-breaker and in the end it was Tan who won.

Tan said that when she realized she was playing one of the all-time greats in R1 at Wimbledon, she wondered if she would be able to win even a few games. She was thrilled to get the win over Williams and will take a lot of confidence going into R2.

Should Serena Williams Call It A Day?

Serena was disappointed at being eliminated in R1 but put on a brave face and told media that she gave it her all today but her all wasn’t good enough! Serena will turn 41 on Sep 26 and admitted that she was not sure what her future in tennis looks like anymore.

Serena said that she was happy with how she felt at the moment and is keen on playing at the 2022 U.S. Open. In many ways, Serena has already made that transition from being a full-time tennis player to an astute businesswoman who runs a venture capitalist firm. The 2022 U.S. Open which is the final grand slam of the year could very well be her final farewell song!
