Quinton de Kock refusing to take the knee with his South African team matesThe ICC T20 World Cup is currently underway in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the games have been really good so far, with quite a few upsets. Speaking of upsets, Cricket South Africa (CSA) have been upset with the media coverage they have been getting after former captain Quinton de Kock (far left) refused to take a knee along with the rest of the squad. CSA have made it mandatory for all their players to take a knee before going on to the field.

South Africa have so far played two games, lost won and won one. Quinny is one of their most dangerous players in the T20 format as he gets quick runs at the top of the order and also keeps wickets for South Africa.

de Kock refused to take the knee against the West Indies earlier this week and decided to make himself unavailable for the game. de Kock did not give any explanation as to why he did not want to take the knee and put it down to personal reasons when the incident first happened.

South Africa along with a number of other teams at the ICC World Cup have resorted to taking the knee to show support for the black lives matter campaign, which focuses only on the lives of black people never mind all the other cultures/races who get discriminated everyday. de Kock has since apologised for the incident but has held on to his belief that an individual shouldn’t be forced to conform as it is a meaningless gesture otherwise.

The gesture of going down on one knee initially started in the National Football League (NFL) in America when Colin Kaepernick started taking a knee to show support for black people who suffer violence. Soon a number of NFL players started taking a knee and it caused quite a controversy in the NFL. NFL franchises did not want to have anything to do with Kaepernick who remains a free agent.

Cricket South Africa have opened discussions with de Kock to see if they can find out what is going on and resolve the matter as South Africa are expected to play Sri Lanka on Oct 30.

De Kock Might Have Played Last Game For SA

The South African Cricketer’s Association (SACA) has supported de Kock’s refusal to take a knee and said that CSA should not have made it mandatory for players as every player should have the freedom to decide what he wants to do and should not be forced to do it.

Lungani Zama, a South African journalist who knows Quinny personally said that he knows for a fact that Quinny is not racist and treats all races equally but did not want to be forced into doing something he did not want to do.
