The Premier League action from gameweek 27 continues on Sunday and Monday. We have already covered one of Sunday’s games; Here are previews of the rest of Sunday and Monday’s games:
Sunday
Newcastle v Manchester United (2:15PM)
This clash could have big implications at both ends of the Premier League table. Newcastle are trying to avoid the drop and Manchester United are looking to consolidate their position in the Champions League spots.
Newcastle have enjoyed a mixed campaign on their return to the English top-flight. The Magpies are just a point clear of the relegation zone after a winless run of four games the English top-flight. Last time out Rafa Benitez’s side picked up a 1-1 draw at fellow strugglers Crystal Palace.
The north east side have struggled for wins at St James Park of late, as the Magpies have failed to win in eight league games at St James, although the last three games have finished all square. Newcastle have won just one of the last 14 games against the Red Devils at St James Park.
Manchester United’s main priority now looks to seal a Champions League spot this season, with rivals Manchester City seemingly uncatchable in top spot. Jose Mourinho’s team are currently seven points clear of fifth-placed Tottenham in the race for the top four spots.
Last time out the Red Devils recorded a comfortable 2-0 home win over Huddersfield at Old Trafford. The win means that United have now suffered just one league defeat in their last ten Premier League games, having won four of their last five games in the English top-flight. Jose Mourinho’s men head into this clash as heavy favourites to record a victory.
Southampton v Liverpool (4:30 PM)
This is another game that pits a relegation struggler against one of the teams chasing a top-four finish. Southampton are just two points clear of the drop zone, while Liverpool could find themselves fourth in the table by the end of Saturday.
Southampton have been in recent months, as a 3-2 win at bottom club West Brom last time out ended a run of 12 league games without a win for the struggling south coast outfit. Mauricio Pochettino’s team have struggled at home in the league of late, failing to win in their last six home league outings at St Marys. However, the Saints are now undefeated in four league outings.
Liverpool heads into this game in decent form in the league. Jurgen Klopp’s side form on their travels has been good of late, as the Merseysiders have won six out of their last eight league games on their travels. The Reds have also been highly prolific on the road in the league, scoring at least twice in seven of their last eight away games.
Monday night
Reigning Premier League champions Chelsea need to get their season back on track in this clash after consecutive defeats in the Premier League. West Brom are desperately in need of a victory after sinking to the bottom of the table.
Chelsea suffered a 4-1 defeat Watford last time out after Tiemoue Bakayoko saw red on the half-hour mark. The defeat leaves the Blues clinging to their top-four spot, with Spurs just a point behind Antonio Conte’s side. One positive for the Blues is that they have won seven of their last night home games in the league. The champions have also kept clean sheets in four of their last five games at Stamford Bridge.
West Brom have struggled for results in recent months in the top-flight. In fact, the Baggies have won just one of their last 24 Premier League games. Last time out the team from the Midlands suffered a 3-2 home defeat against Southampton. The defeat leaves Alan Pardew’s side four points away from safety, although that gap could be far bigger by the end of the weekend’s Premier League fixtures.
