Local Casinos Like South Point Thrive Amid Vegas Tourism Dip

South Point CasinoSummary:

  • South Point Casino keep attracting locals and out-of-town visitors with a clever mix of resort amenities with a locals-first feel.
  • Guests enjoy the friendly atmosphere, affordable prices, and unique offerings.
  • Management credits its “hybrid model” and commitment to traditional perks like buffets and reasonable room rates.

While some Las Vegas resorts are feeling the sting of a tourism slowdown, the South Point Casino has managed to carve out a steady path forward by appealing to both locals and visitors who want something a little different from the Strip’s constant buzz.

For residents like Brenda and Jason Leonard, the appeal is easy to explain. “Everybody here’s so friendly and we’re on a day date, so… kids are in school. It’s a perfect time for us to go out” Brenda said in an interview for KSNV NBC Las Vegas.

Her husband chimed in with his own reasons, including his love for the food severed there, the “great” hospitality, and the vicinity to their home.

That mix of convenience and comfort has been the recipe for success for South Point. Located on Las Vegas Boulevard but away from the heart of the Strip, the property sits in a sweet spot between a full-scale resort and a neighborhood hangout.

General manager Ryan Growney believes that balance is responsible for their resilience.

We benefit, because we’re a hybrid model, right? We’re on Las Vegas Boulevard, 2200 rooms, but we’re really a local casino, so it’s a beautiful blend that we have here that has helped us through this time

Something for Everyone

On top of its casino floor, South Point also leans on offering attractions for the entire family, including a movie theater, a bowling alley, and even an arcade.

For UNLV freshman Olivia Gallardo, the connection is personal.

I feel like I’ve grown up in this movie theater. I’ve always come to this movie theater. It’s nostalgic and it feels safe and fun

The casino’s reach, however is not strictly limited to local residents. Travelers like April and Nathaniel Groll, who made the trip from Central California to meet up family from Ohio, say they’ve found something refreshing at South Point.

They normally stay at Harrah’s, and they were just tired of the Strip and they wanted to try something new. We’re Gonna Be Okay

Growney believes part of South Point’s success comes from sticking with traditions that many other resorts have abandoned.

We still have a buffet, know our rooms are still reasonable, know our drink prices are still reasonable. We’ll continue to do things the way that we always have, and we’re pretty confident we can, we’re gonna be okay.

Foer the time being, as properties on The Strip face declining visitor numbers, South Point’s blend allows it to keep attracting both longtime locals and curious tourists.
