City and Arsenal record wins, as Stoke and Burnley finish all square

On Sunday afternoon, three more of the Premier League gameweek 35 fixtures took place. Manchester City and Arsenal recorded wins, while Stoke and Burnley drew 1-1.

City hammers the Swans at the Etihad Stadium

Newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City recorded a 5-0 victory over Swansea at the Etihad Stadium. The victory just summed up the Citizens brilliance this season, as they enjoyed 83 per cent possession during the game.

City took the lead on 12 minutes. Raheem Sterling played a reverse pass to David Silva, who fired a low strike into the far corner. Pep Guardiola’s side doubled their lead, as Sterling scored a tap-in after good work from David Silva and cross from Fabian Delph.

The home side made it three nine minutes into the second half, as Kevin De Bruyne hit a sublime effort from 30 yards into the top corner of the net. Ten minutes later City won a penalty, as Swansea defender Federico Fernandez made a silly foul on Sterling.

Gabriel Jesus stepped up and saw his spot-kick hit the post, only for Bernardo Silva to follow in and score with the rebound.

Jesus did finally get his name on the scoresheet on 88 minutes, diverting a superb chipped Yaya Toure cross past the helpless Lukasz Fabianski with his head. The Brazilian had deserved the good for his sheer determination to get on the scoresheet.

The result meant very little to City, who have already sealed the title. However, at the other end of the table, the visitors remain just four points clear of the relegation zone with just four league games remaining.

Arsenal eventually overcome West Ham

In Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger’s penultimate home league game in charge of the Gunners, the Frenchman’s team recorded a 4-1 win over West Ham at the Emirates Stadium.

After a goalless first half Arsenal took the lead early in the first half, as Spanish full-back Nacho Monreal struck a stunning volley from a Granit Xhaka corner kick. However, the visitors were back in the game on 64 minutes after Austrian international Marko Arnautovic scored with a powerful strike.

West Ham looked to be heading for a point. However, with just eight minutes remaining, Irons youngster Declan Rice decided not to head away Aaron Ramsey’s cross and the Welshman’s centre went past Joe Hart into the goal. Arsenal put a gloss on the scoreline in the final five minutes, as French striker Alexandre Lacazette struck with two powerful efforts.

The result leaves Arsenal sixth-place and six points behind fifth-place Chelsea. Meanwhile, West Ham are now six points clear of the relegation zone and despite the defeat look unlikely to suffer relegation.

Stoke and Burnley ends all square

Stoke headed into their home clash with Burnley in desperate need of maximum points to escape the relegation zone. However, they could only muster a 1-1 with seventh-place Burnley at the Bet365 Stadium.

Stoke made the ideal start on 11 minutes, as midfielder Badou Ndiaye’s effort from 20 yards out took a deflection and found its way past Nick Pope in the Clarets goal. Burnley equalised just after the hour-mark, as striker Ashley Barnes scrambled home his sixth goal in his last eight top-flight appearances. Stoke clipped the post through Stephen Ireland, while at the other end of the field, Jack Butland produced two saves from Johann Berg Gudmundsson.

In the end, though, it finished all square, meaning that Stoke are now four points away from safety having played a game more than the four teams above them. The Potters remain one of the three favourites to suffer relegation. Burnley are seventh-place, which would be enough for a place in the qualifying rounds of the Europa League for next season.
