Tottenham headed into Sunday’s game on the south coast against relegation-threatened Southampton as firm favourites. However, the north London side struggled for guile without the missing Christian Eriksen due to illness.
The home side took an unexpected lead on 15 minutes. Tottenham defender Davinson Sanchez put a Ryan Bertrand cross past his own ‘keeper to give the home side a lift.
However, parity did not last long, three minutes in fact. Tottenham talisman Harry Kane got above Saints centre-back Jack Stephens to powerfully head past Alex McCarthy in the home goal.
At this stage, the game looked set to be a goal fest. However, it failed to live up to the first 20 minutes of action. Moussa Sissoko missed a fantastic chance from close-range for the visitors, while at the other end Stephens headed just wide from a James Ward-Prowse cross.
The second half was short of chances. Tottenham’s Dele Alli hit an effort wide from 20 yards, while Erik Lamela also missed from close-range. Southampton debutant Michael Obafemi, also spurn a chance from eight yards for the home side.
In the end, a draw was arguably a fair result. Unfortunately, for the Saints, it was not enough to move them out of the relegation zone. Tottenham are now two points behind fourth-place Liverpool, who play at Swansea this evening.

Liverpool visit struggling Swansea on Monday night. The Merseysiders are hot favourites to record a victory at the Liberty Stadium.
Swansea head into this game bottom of the Premier League table, six points away from safety. The picture looks like a grim one for Carlos Carvalhal and his team. The Swans record of just two wins in their last 15 league outings is a concerning one, especially with the visitors in such good form of late.
Even the Swans home form has been poor in the English top-flight of late, as the Welsh side have recorded just two wins in their last 11 home games in the league.
Liverpool heads into this game full of confidence following four consecutive Premier League wins. The Merseysiders are also now 14 league games unbeaten after a 4-3 win over league leaders Manchester City last time out.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have been highly prolific this season, with only league leaders Manchester City scoring more goals in the top-flight this season.
The Merseysiders have unsurprisingly been prolific in recent league games, scoring at least two goals in their last six top-flight outings. Meanwhile, the Reds have also been high scoring on their travels, scoring at least two goals in their last six away games in the top-flight.
Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah will be looking to add to his tally of 18 Premier league goals in this clash. The former Chelsea star has produced either a goal or an assist in his last five top-flight appearances.
