The Premier League season is reaching the final stretch and much is still left to be decided, so this weekend’s games could be crucial at both ends of the top-flight table. Here are the games taking place this weekend:
Saturday
Manchester United v Liverpool (kick-off 12:30 PM)
This big north west derby could be crucial in the race for the Champions League spots, with the two teams involved second and third in the table respectively.
United’s form has been slightly inconsistent of late. However, the Red Devils have won three of their last four games in the English top-flight. Jose Mourinho’s team have also scored two or more goals in all three wins.
The home side has lost just two of their last 41 home games in the Premier League, with both of those defeats inflicted by arch-rivals Manchester City. Mourinho’s men are favourites to prevail on home soil once again in this big clash.
Liverpool heads up the M62 in good form. The Reds have lost just one of their last 20 games in the top-flight, winning four times from their last five league outings. Jurgen Klopp’s side has been prolific in the top-flight of late, scoring two or more goals in their five league games.
The Reds recent form in away games in the top-flight has been rather mixed of late, as the visitors have won three, drawn one and lost one of their last five games. Like their league games in general, the Merseysiders have been prolific on their travels, scoring two or more goals in four of their last five games on the road.
Newcastle v Southampton (kick-off 3 PM)
Newcastle and Southampton have both endured difficult Premier League campaigns. The pair are struggling to stay out of the relegation zone, with the Magpies just two points clear of the drop zone and the Saints a point above the dread bottom three.
Picking up wins has been difficult for both sides of late, as Newcastle have won just once in their last seven league outings and the visitors just once in their last 16 games in the top-flight.
A common theme from both teams of late in the Premier League is drawing games. Newcastle have drawn three of their last five home games, while Southampton have drawn three of their last four league games on their travels. This game could very well follow suit and is set to be very tight.
Huddersfield v Swansea (kick-off 3 PM)
Huddersfield and Swansea are another pair looking over their shoulders at the Premier League drop zone. Both teams are just three points clear of danger, although the visitors are above their hosts on goal difference.
Huddersfield have won two of their last three league games. However, a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham is unlikely to have damaged morale too much, considering Spurs’ form of late. A concern for David Wagner’s team is their home record, as Town have claimed just two wins in their last 11 league games at the John Smiths Stadium.
The fact that the Terriers have scored just six goals in their last five home games in the league is also a worry, although four of those six goals were scored in their last home game a 4-1 hammering of Bournemouth.
Swansea have risen from the ashes like a phoenix since the arrival of Portuguese boss Carlos Carvalhal. The Swans have suffered just one defeat in seven top-flight outings, winning three of their last five league games.
The Welsh sides form on their travels has not improved that much in recent months, though, as the visitors have won just once in their last 11 games on the road. A win in this clash would move the Swans within a few wins from safety.
