Manchester United’s forward, Mason Greenwood, is getting closer and closer to completing his transfer to Marseille.
The Manchester United player left for France for his medical checkup after, according to sources, he agreed to personal terms with fee and add-on included of over €30 million (£25.2 million).
The Premier League Club have negotiated what they consider an important sell-on clause on the contract that is set to expire in 2029.
Marseille Received Criticism from City Mayor and Fans
Last week, when the club’s intentions to transfer Greenwood became clear, Marseille received criticism from the city mayor who asked them not to sign the player, calling the forward’s alleged past behavior “unspeakable“.
Greenwood, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, was accused of domestic violence and sexual assault in 2022. According to the UK’s Crown Prosecution Service, the charges against the striker were dropped in February 2023.
The player has previously denied the allegations brought to him.
In August 2023, he said he “did not do the things” he was accused of and that he “fully” accepted that he “made mistakes” in his relationship, taking his “share of responsibility for the situations which led to the social media post.”
The criticism didn’t solely stop at the city mayor. Team fans took to a popular online forum to discuss the proposed move in an open letter in which they called the player’s joining the club “a red line that would irreparably damage” their passion for the club.
However, Marseille was not deterred from welcoming Greenwood to Roberto de Zerbi’s squad likely for the upcoming campaign.
Greenwood, who has not played for United since January 2022, met senior club officials last week and received confirmation he would be sold.
Greenwood is expected to replace Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who announced he would bid goodbye to the Ligue 1 side on his social media.
