Did Sexual Assault Allegations Lead To McGregor’s Retirement?

Updated On Mar 27, 2019 by Landon Wheeler

Conor McGregor, arguably the most popular mixed martial artist surprised a lot of people on March 26 when he announced his retirement through his Twitter account. The Irish superstar is a former UFC Champion in two different weight classes.

His last fight was a submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov in October 2018. McGregor will leave behind a legacy of both success and controversy. Social media initially played down McGregor’s retirement stating that it was another bargaining tactic that McGregor was using with the UFC, given the fact that he has retired before on social media.

Less than 24 hours after McGregor required, reports surfaced that McGregor has been accused of sexual assault in Dublin, Ireland. The alleged incident apparently took place at the Beacon Hotel which is not too far from Crumlin, which is McGregor’s home town. The incident is alleged to have taken place in December 2018.

While no charges have been filed and McGregor hasn’t been officially named as the ‘suspect’, reports do show that a famous Irish sportsman was brought in for questioning with regards to the sexual assault but there was no evidence to back the woman’s claims.

McGregor’s spokesperson quickly released a statement to claim that these sexual assault allegations played absolutely no role in McGregor’s untimely retirement and also emphasized that should the MMA star decide to fight again, he will only do so in an environment where fighters are respected.

Dana White On McGregor Retirement

UFC President Dana White acknowledged McGregor’s retirement tweet by stating that he completely understood why McGregor wanted to bow out. White and McGregor have had a rocky relationship in the last couple of years due to McGregor’s crazy antics.

White said McGregor is currently doing very well with his Proper Twelve Whisky and pointed out that while McGregor is retiring from MMA, he is not retiring from working.

McGregor had already emphasized Dana White’s point of view in an appearance on the Tonight Show. Conor stated on the show that he doesn’t need to fight again and that he and his family are set for life.

Because of McGregor’s volatile behaviour, many fighters and analysts in MMA don’t believe we have seen the last of the Irish legend. This is most likely another pressure tactic used by McGregor on the UFC and Dana White but this time around it backfired with the sexual assault allegations surfacing at the same time!
