City and Palace pick up massive wins in the Premier League

Saturday’s Premier League games produced some massive results at the top and bottom of the top-flight table, including big wins for leaders Manchester City and struggling Crystal Palace. Here is what happened in Saturday’s games:

City move closer to sealing the title

Doubts have been raised about Premier League leaders Manchester City in recent days after three straight defeats. However, Pep Guardiola’s side responded in empathic style to those doubts on Saturday night recording a 3-1 win at fourth-place Tottenham.

The Citizens took the lead on 22 minutes. Vincent Kompany’s through ball completely dissected the Spurs defence and found striker Gabriel Jesus, who fired past the out-coming home goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

The visitors doubled their lead three minutes later. Lloris produced a reckless challenge on Raheem Sterling and although the tackle was arguably outside the area, City were awarded a penalty kick and midfielder Ilkay Gundogan made no mistake with his spot-kick.

Spurs were back in the game just before half-time, with a very fortunate goal. Aymeric Laporte attempted to clear his lines only for the ball to hit Spurs midfielder Christian Eriksen and beat Ederson in the City goal. Tottenham looked more lively in the second period, but City still had the better chances, with Jesus and Sterling both missing good chances.

However, Guardiola’s side did seal the win on 72 minutes. Sterling scored from close-range after Lloris has saved Jesus’ effort on goal. The goal and win mean that City will be crowned champions if Manchester United suffers an unlikely defeat against West Brom on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Eagles soar against the Seagulls

Crystal Palace were in desperate need of a victory against Brighton at Selhurst Park on Saturday to move away from the relegation zone. The Eagles secured victory in an entertaining 3-2 win over the Seagulls to move six points clear of the drop zone.

The home side enjoyed a dream start, as Wilfried Zaha scored from close-range after Luka Milivojevic had drilled an effort towards goal. The Eagles doubled their lead on 14 minutes, as centre-back James Tomkins smashed home a powerful effort from inside the area after a scramble in the box.

It did not take the Seagulls long to respond though, as Glenn Murray volleyed high into the roof of the net after Lewis Dunk had won the ball in the air. Palace restored their two-goal lead on 24 minutes. The same to players were involved as Zaha headed home from Milivojevic’s high cross.

Brighton completed the scoring in the first half, as winger Jose Izquierdo beat Joel Ward before finishing past Wayne Hennessey in the home goal. The second half continued to be competitive, but Brighton could not find a crucial equaliser.

The Seagulls are still very much in the fight for survival. However, they are not one of the favourites to suffer relegation, with the bottom three currently favourited by the bookmakers for the drop this season.
