Bally Bet launched its sports betting app in Maryland at the start of the week after the state’s Lottery and Gaming Control Commission gave Bally’s Interactive the green light for online sports betting launch in the Free State.
Successful Controlled Demo
On July 25, Bally’s completed a controlled demonstration of the app during which it enabled customers to place wagers on the platform.
The demonstration confirmed the systems were fully functional and worked according to all procedures, clearing the path for the operator to receive the license it needed to launch in the state just ahead of the upcoming NHL 2024 season.
The app is also live in New York, Indiana, Iowa, Arizona, Ohio, Virginia, Colorado, and Massachusetts, following Bally Bet’s launch earlier in the month.
Maryland Departures and Newcomers
Bally Bet is the freshest operator to enter the sports betting market in Maryland which has witnessed several additions and departures of sportsbooks ahead of the NHL 2024 season.
For example, earlier in the month, Superbook, the operator who took in 0.1% of Maryland’s total online handle in June, announced it would stop receiving bets outside Nevada.
Similarly, Betfred broke the news that it would leave Maryland and officially shut down its app on July 31, following the closure of its retail sportsbook at Long Shot’s in Fredrick on June 30.
The operator also exited Ohio in July.
Starting July 1, Veterans Services Corporation began accepting bets in Maryland via a mobile-only license alongside operating partner Bee-Fee.
Betr, a microbetting platform, is currently waiting for its final approval to join the Maryland market after it applied for a sports betting license earlier in the year.
Bally Bet’s sportsbook is currently the 13th online sportsbook available for consumers in Maryland. The state also counts 12 live retail sportsbooks.
Bally Bet will bring its contribution to Maryland’s Future Fund, showing support for a series of local public education programs.
In FY 2023-24, the respective fund managed to secure $60.3 million in tax revenue from sports betting operations.
Overall, Maryland’s market reached the $384 million mark in handle last month.
