Brendan Sorsby, the Texas Tech quarterback who is still at the center of a controversial eligibility and gambling fight, is currently planning to enter the NFL Supplemental Draft just in time for the upcoming NFL season, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
The decision could mark a dramatic turn in a case that has already attracted a plethora of legal action, NCAA rulings, and heated debate.
From Eligibility Battle to NFL Exit
Sorsby’s situation escalated after it was revealed he had placed roughly $90,000 in bets on professional and college sports over a four-year span, including wagers tied to games involving his former team during his time at Indiana.
The NCAA ruled him ineligible, but a Texas court granted a temporary injunction in early June that restored his ability to play college football. That ruling was quickly challenged, with the Big 12 filing legal action and several programs reportedly distancing themselves from Texas Tech scheduling.
Despite initially being cleared to return to the Texas Tech Red Raiders, Sorsby ultimately chose to leave college football entirely amid mounting pressure and uncertainty surrounding his status.
He had been expected to be one of the most valuable players in college football in 2026 after transferring from Cincinnati and producing a strong 2025 season with 2,800 passing yards and 27 touchdowns.
Why the Supplemental Draft Is Important
The NFL Supplemental Draft was last held in 2023, with no player being selected since 2019. In order for the process to move forward in 2026, the league would first need to give the green light to Sorsby’s application.
If activated, the draft would follow a weighted lottery system and allow teams to bid future draft picks on eligible players. Any team that selects Sorsby would forfeit the corresponding pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.
NFL teams would also have to match bids against one another, with the player awarded to the highest bidder or the team with the best draft position among tied offers.
According to NFL reporters, including Jeremy Fowler, multiple league executives view Sorsby as having significant value, potentially equivalent to a second-round supplemental pick or even late first-round talent.
Draft analyst Matt Miller noted that before his eligibility issues surfaced, Sorsby was viewed internally as a potential top-tier quarterback prospect, ranking near the top of his position group for future draft classes.
Scouts call him a strong-armed, athletic passer who is able to create off-script plays, even though consistency and decision-making remain concerns.
Early projections suggest multiple quarterback-needy franchises could consider making bids if the Supplemental Draft is approved.
Teams frequently mentioned include rebuilding or transitional QB situations such as Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and Atlanta Falcons, among others.
