Summary:
- The Rams agreed to a four-year, $124 million extension with cornerback Trent McDuffie, including $100 million guaranteed.
- The deal makes the 25-year-old the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
- Los Angeles traded draft picks to the Chiefs to acquire him, filling a major need in their secondary.
The Los Angeles Rams moved quickly after trading for cornerback Trent McDuffie, locking him into a massive new contract that resets the football market at his position.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Rams and McDuffie agreed Sunday to a four-year extension worth $124 million, with $100 million guaranteed.
At an average of $31 million per season, the deal makes the 25-year-old the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
The agreement comes only days after the Rams struck a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs to bring McDuffie to Los Angeles. The deal, reached last Wednesday, sends a package of draft picks to Kansas City, including the No. 29 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
The trade and contract are expected to become official Wednesday when the new league year begins.
Ahead of Top-Paid Cornerbacks
Prior to the extension, McDuffie was entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Chiefs had already exercised his fifth-year option last April, which guaranteed him $13.6 million for the 2026 season. The new deal obviously changes that picture in a big way.
His $31 million annual average now puts him ahead of other top-paid corners, including the Indianapolis Colts’ Sauce Gardner at $30.1 million and the Houston Texans’ Derek Stingley Jr. at $30 million. Stingley previously held the record for guaranteed money at the position with $89 million.
For the Rams, the move addresses a clear need. Cornerback was one of the team’s biggest question marks heading into free agency and the draft, especially with four players at the position set to hit free agency.
Veteran corner Darious Williams also announced his retirement Saturday, making the position an even bigger priority.

The Rams still hold the No. 13 overall pick in the 2026 draft after previously trading back with the Atlanta Falcons in the 2025 draft.
The Chiefs will receive several picks in return for McDuffie. Along with the 2026 first-rounder at No. 29, Kansas City is expected to get fifth- and sixth-round picks in 2026 and a third-round pick in 2027.
For McDuffie, the move also brings him closer to home, as the Southern California native played his senior year at St. John Bosco High School.
In total, the player has 56 career game appearances, recording three interceptions, 34 pass breakups, 5.5 sacks, and 246 tackles. He was also named first-team All-Pro in 2023 and has been one of the league’s most consistent coverage defenders.
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, he has allowed just 6.0 yards per target over the past two seasons, the third-best mark among defensive backs who have faced at least 150 targets.
Since entering the NFL in 2022, Trent McDuffie has spent 17 minutes and 26 seconds in tight coverage, the 5th-most in the league.
