When Danushka Gunathilaka travelled to Australia for the T20 World Cup in 2022, he never would have imagined the nightmare that was about to unravel and get him suspended from the Sri Lankan cricket team.

What Happened To Danushka Gunathilaka?

Gunathilaka suffered a hamstring tear and was ruled out of the T20 World Cup in Australia but he kept himself busy by using Tinder and going on a date. That date turned into a nightmare as the woman in question would go on to file a complaint with the authorities alleging that Gunathilaka had forceful sex with her.

She also claimed he resorted to stealthing which is a term used to describe the fact that he agreed to use a condom during intercourse but did not do so. The authorities arrested Gunathilaka on Nov 2, 2022 in Sydney, Australia and his arrest made global news.

The Sri Lankan Cricket board suspended him soon after and his legal team has spent the last 10 months defending him as Gunathilaka claimed he was innocent of the accusations.

Judge Rules In Favour Of Gunathilaka Based On Witness’s Evidence

The trial was turned into a judge only trial due to the amount of media interest in the case pre-trial. The judge also agreed to a speedy trial after Gunathilaka’s legal team presented the fact that he supported his parents financially and was unable to do so due to the allegations.

The judge took into consideration all of the evidence which included video that showed Gunathilaka and his Tinder date laughing and having fun on their way to her apartment. The witness also presented evidence to state that when they started having sex, Gunathilaka used a condom.

She went on to say that after they had finished having continuous sexual intercourse, she looked on her bedroom floor and found a condom on the ground, which led her to believe that Gunathilaka had resulted to stealthing.

Gunathilaka’s legal team pointed out that it was not possible to remove a condom during ‘continuous sexual intercourse’ which were the words of the witness and the judge agreed and dismissed the case.
