Sergio Aguero to return home in 2020

Argentina and Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero is one of the best players in his position in the world. He has been prolific for Atletico Madrid and City since his arrival in European football as a teenager from boyhood club Independiente.

Set to return to home

Sergio Aguero, Club Atlético IndependienteIt seems that Aguero is planning to return to his first club Independiente in 2020 when his contract with the Citizens expires. Sky Sports quote the striker as saying: “I always said that I would like to return to Independiente when my contract ends with City, which is in 2020. I am not thinking about that now. I am focused on finishing the season well and reaching the World Cup.”

The striker has been instrumental in City’s stellar campaign, scoring 30 times and producing seven assists in all competitions this season. He is a crucial part of Pep Guardiola’s team, despite much speculation over his future in the last year or so.

The 29-year-old is a natural born goalscorer, which has seen the striker score 20-plus goals in the last four league seasons in the Premier League.

Aguero a key player for Argentina

Argentina are blessed with some of the best attacking talent in world football. Apart from Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi, Jorge Sampaoli has the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Paolo Dybala and Marco Icardi available to him.

However, Aguero on his day can be just as clinical as all the other strikers in the Argentina squad. It could be argued, though, that he has underachieved for Argentina, just like his team in recent years.

Despite so many talented attacking players available to the South American giants, they have flattered to deceive in the big international tournaments of late.

However, Sampaoli’s team are once again one of the favourites to win the World Cup this summer in Russia. If Argentina are to lift the trophy, then Messi needs help and Aguero is very much capable of giving the Barcelona man needs.

Plenty left in the tank

This year could prove to be a big one for Aguero. Not only are Manchester City set to become English champions, they are in the last eight of the Champions League, where they face fellow English side Liverpool over two-legs.

The striker will also have the opportunity to win the World Cup. Only one South American team has ever won the World Cup in Europe, which was back in 1958, as Pele helped Brazil lift the trophy in Sweden.

If Sampaoli can find a way to turn the talented group of individuals into a team, then Aguero and co have the potential to lift the trophy.

Aguero is nowhere near finished yet. The diminutive striker has plenty left in the tank. In fact, some would say he is currently in the prime of his career as a striker.

The striker will no doubt continue to score vital goals for club and country for some time to come. If Aguero decides to head home to play for Independiente in 2020 as stated, then the striker will leave as a City legend and I doubt many fans of the Manchester club will begrudge him a move back home.

Will Sergio Aguero leave Manchester City in 2020?
