According to an anonymous source close to the situation who spoke to USA TODAY Sports, the Kansas City Chiefs are getting ready to welcome a new quarterback.

Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz will be inking a one-year contract with the team. The Chiefs plan to see Wentz become a top backup quarterback behind two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.

Five Teams in Five Seasons

The announcement means that Wentz will be joining his fifth team in a total of five seasons.

Starting as the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, the quarterback spent five years in Philly.

While representing the team, he was chosen for the Pro Bowl in 2017 after helming the Eagles in the regular season before he teared his ACL.

In 2021, he was traded to the Indianapolis Colts where he spent one season before he was sent to the Washington Commanders before the 2022 season began.

His rocky campaign in Washington saw him being released at the end of the 2023 season.

He then joined the Los Angeles Rams as backup for Matthew Stafford, showing up in two games in Los Angeles and registering one start.

In the two games he attended, Wentz recorded a total of 163 passing yards, one interception, and two touchdowns.

He also assisted the team with a game-winning drive over the San Francisco 49ers in the season finale.

The player started in 93 career games but a total of eight contests from 2021 onward. He tallied 153 touchdowns, 22,292 passing yards, and 67 interceptions in 95 career games, which led to an 89.4 all-time passer rating.

Helping the Chiefs Win Three Consecutive Super Bowl Titles

By joining the team with four prestigious Super Bowls under its belt in total, Wentz, who is an eight-year veteran, will be allowed to help the Chiefs become the NFL’s first franchise to win three consecutive Super Bowls – Can they do it? The 31-year player is expected to provide the Chiefs with a veteran insurance plan behind Mahomes.

Blaine Gabbert, who is now an unrestricted free agent, was Kansas City’s primary backup quarterback last year.
