United KingdomGameweek 26 of the Premier League campaign produced some big victories for teams at both ends of the table. Here is what happened in Saturday’s top-flight games:
The early Premier League kick-off produced a slightly surprising result, as runaway league leaders Manchester City dropped two points at Turf Moor.
City took the lead on 22 minutes through a fantastic curling effort from 25 yards out by full-back Danilo, after the Brazilian had received the ball from a short corner by Bernardo Silva.
Both teams had chances to further the scoring, with the closest effort to goal when Ederson produced a fantastic save to tip Aaron Lennon’s powerful effort onto the woodwork. City’s Raheem Sterling then managed to miss from a few yards out when completely unmarked. The miss proved costly on 82 minutes. Matthew Lowton fired a long-range cross to the back post and Johan Berg Gudmundsson volleyed past Ederson.
The draw coupled with results elsewhere mean that City are now 13 points clear at the top of the table. However, they are still clear favourites to win the top-flight title. Burnley remains seventh in the table.
Brighton recorded what could be a massive victory over fellow strugglers West Ham at the AMEX Stadium.
The Seagulls took the lead on eight minutes. Playmaker Pascal Gross played in Glenn Murray and the striker fired home for his tenth goal of the campaign. The Irons equalised on the half-hour mark. Javier Hernandez beat three Brighton defenders before firing past Mat Ryan in the home goal.
However, Brighton were back ahead just before the hour mark, as winger Jose Izquierdo fired home with a powerful drive. Chris Hughton’s side sealed the victory with 15 minutes left on the clock, as Gross his a powerful effort beyond Adrian to seal maximum points.
The win moved Chris Hughton’s team on to level points with the visitors. However, both teams are still just three points clear of the relegation zone, with the bottom of the table now very congested.
Southampton also recorded a vital win at bottom of the table West Brom, as the Saints moved out of the relegation zone.
The home enjoyed a good start and took the lead on four minutes, defender Ahmed Hegazi heading home from Chris Brunt’s corner kick. The Saints equalised on 40 minutes, as French midfielder Mario Lemina stroke a sublime effort from 25 yards out. Three minutes later the visitors were ahead, as defender Jack Stephens headed home.
The team from the south coast scored a third on 55 minutes, as James Ward-Prowse fired home with a low free-kick. The Baggies looked to be back in the game with 12 minutes remaining, as Salomon Rondon headed home from another Brunt delivery. However, the visitors held to three precious points.
The defeat means that West Brom are now four points away from safety. The visitors moved up to 14th with the victory. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s team are still just two points clear of the relegation zone.
