PGA Tour 2019: The Honda Classic Betting Preview

Updated On Feb 27, 2019 by Ryan Knuppel

PGA Tour: The Honda ClassicThe “Florida swing” portion of the PGA Tour season will kick off this weekend with the 2019 Honda Classic taking place in Palm Springs.

The PGA Tour has been played on the West Coast up to this point in the season, and transitioning to the East Coast is always a challenge for the field.

The PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens has been the host of this tournament since 2007, and it is considered one of the toughest courses around. The possibility of hitting it in the water is very real at this course, and there are also over 100 bunkers.

Let’s take a quick look at the field and some betting odds before predicting a winner.

The Field: After almost all of the game’s best golfers took part in the World Golf Classic in Mexico last weekend, a lot of big names are sitting out this weekend. The Honda Classic field is without Dustin Johnson who blew away the field last weekend. Last year’s Honda Classic champion, Justin Thomas, is back this season and is the deserving and overwhelming favourite. Luke List is also back, who lost a playoff to Thomas last year to lose the tournament. Rickie Fowler and Adam Scott were also recent winners in this event, and should be considered strong contenders again in 2019.

The Odds

Favourites

Justin Thomas (+510)
Rickie Fowler (+945)
Brooks Koepka (+1225)
Adam Scott (+1400)
Sergio Garcia (+1600)
Gary Woodland (+1900)
Webb Simpson (+2200)

Realistically, the winner of the 2019 Honda Championship should come from this group of talented golfers. All seven of these players have had success at this event in the past, and they can all play great with their irons, which is a must at the PGA National. Justin Thomas is the clear favourite at +510 largely based on his victory here a season ago. Thomas has gotten off to a great start this season, but he will be challenged in this event.

Best of The Rest

Cameron Smith (+2500)
Billy Horschel (+4000)
Emiliano Grillo (+4000)
Daniel Berger (+4000)
Luke List (+4000)
Scott Piercy (+4500)
Byeong Hun An (+4500)
Alex Noren (+4500)
Matt Wallace (+5500)
Russell Knox (+5500)
Michael Thompson (+6000)
Lucas Glover (+6000)
Kiradech Aphibarnrat (+6000)
Jason Kokrak (+6000)
Zach Johnson (+6000)
J.T. Poston (+6600)
Everyone Else (+7000 Or Higher)

Underdog Worth Betting On: Russell Knox (+5500)

Russell Knox is my underdog pick this week based on his past history at this event. Knox finished top-3 in both 2014 and 2015 and it is clear that he feels comfortable at this course. The Scottish golfer has already had one top-10 finish this season, and looks like he is close to breaking out. It might be worth taking a shot on Russell Knox at the Honda Classic this weekend.

The Winner: Webb Simpson +2200 – Taking Justin Thomas to win the 2019 Honda Classic is the easiest choice, but that doesn’t always work when betting on golf. I like Webb Simpson this weekend, and you can get him at a great deal at +2200. Simpson is from the East Coast and should be comfortable playing at Florida this weekend. Simpson already has two top-10 finishes this year, and he will get his first win of the season at this even.

Bet Webb Simpson +2200 to win the 2019 Honda Classic.
