Yankees Regroup, Prevent Sweep with 7-3 Win Over Dodgers

After getting steamrolled in an 18-2 loss Saturday night, the New York Yankees bounced back on Sunday. Aaron Boone’s side took down the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-3 to close out the series on a high note. It wasn’t quite revenge for Saturday’s lopsided defeat, but it was a much-needed response, and enough to avoid the sweep.

The Yankees, who have yet to be swept this MLB season, alongside the Mets and Reds, struck early.

In the first inning, Trent Grisham came home on an error following a base hit by Jasson Domínguez. The Dodgers answered in the second thanks to a solo shot by Tommy Edman, but New York didn’t stay quiet for long.

Ben Rice launched a two-run homer to center field in the third, and a wild pitch by Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed Anthony Volpe to score, extending the lead to 4-1.

Yamamoto, who has been a consistent presence for L.A., struggled on Sunday. He lasted just 3 2/3 innings, the shortest outing of his season, giving up seven hits and four earned runs.

New York padded its lead in the fifth with runs batted in (RBI) singles from DJ LeMahieu and Oswald Peraza, making it 6-1.

The Dodgers Pushed Too Late

Though the Dodgers tried to chip away with back-to-back solo homers from Andy Pages and Max Muncy in the seventh, their push came too late.

The Yankees quickly locked things down in the final two innings, and LeMahieu added an insurance run in the ninth with an RBI double. He finished 4-for-5, recording his first four-hit game since 2021.

Despite Sunday’s win, the Yankees dropped the weekend series after losing 8-5 on Friday, when Shohei Ohtani blasted two home runs, and then enduring Saturday’s brutal blowout, powered by seven RBIs from Muncy.

It was the most runs the Dodgers have ever scored in a game against the Yankees. At one point, things got so out of hand that even Ohtani seemed to check out.

Still, the Yankees head out of L.A. with a 36-22 record and a firm grip on the AL East lead. The Dodgers who are the 2025 World Series Champions, now 36-23, remain atop the NL West and have taken four of their last six games.
