Northern Nevada Gaming Booms as Vegas Slows

Reno, NevadaSummary:

  • The gaming revenue of casinos in Reno and Sparks continues to go up steadily, signaling important regional growth.
  • Mild weather and stable prices attract more visitors to the area.
  • Experts believe upgrades, events, and new developments support the momentum.

Northern Nevada’s gaming and tourism markets are on a strong run, with Reno and Sparks showing steady growth while Las Vegas faces a more uneven period.

Local leaders say several factors are coming together at the right time, with the mild winter keeping Interstate 80 open, simplifying travel for visitors from parts of Northern California. At the same time, casinos in the region made sure to keep prices well-balanced, steering clear of the higher costs seen elsewhere.

Mike Larragueta said

I think a lot is coming together at the right time. It really hasn’t gotten to the point where the customer feels like we’re overpricing the market. That’s worked to our advantage.

The results are clear, with gaming revenue in Reno rising more than 5% in January and February, while Sparks saw an increase of over 9%. Washoe County brought in $1.1 billion in 2025, a modest figure compared to Las Vegas but still an improvement from the year before.

Industry figures point out that Northern Nevada’s regional focus has helped it avoid some of the challenges facing Las Vegas, particularly a drop in international visitors.

Stephen Ascuaga said,

We’re obviously a more regional market. We don’t face the headwinds of international travel and that kind of thing. We’ve become more diversified over time, and I think that’s starting to finally show up in our performance.

Upgrades, Renovations, and Events Add to the Momentum

Renovations and upgrades across several casinos have helped attract visitors, while the Reno-Tahoe International Airport continues to expand, recording its busiest year since 2008.

Conventions and events are adding to the momentum. The Reno-Sparks Convention Center has hosted major gatherings, including a large transportation conference that filled thousands of hotel rooms. New sports events are also bringing in visitors, adding tens of thousands of room nights.

At the same time, development is continuing elsewhere in Nevada. In Henderson, Boyd Gaming has opened a new property called Cadence Crossing, replacing the long-running Joker’s Wild casino. The smaller venue focuses on slots, dining, and local customers, with room for future expansion.

Company leadership says the project reflects long-term growth in the area. “We’ll see how things go. We can add to Cadence later” said Marianne Boyd Johnson.

For Northern Nevada, the current trend is encouraging. Steady pricing, easier access, and ongoing investment are helping the region stand out at a time when other markets are facing more pressure.
