Dana StubblefieldA California court convicted Dana Stubblefield, a former player for the National Football League (NFL) on a number of charges. The most serious of those charges was rape.

Stubblefield, 49, was convicted of enticing a developmentally disabled woman to his home on April 2015 with a babysitting job prospect and raping her under threat of violence. Stubblefield was said to have been introduced to the woman via a babysitting service online. He faces a minimum of 15 years in prison, with the possibility of a life sentence.

The jury found Stubblefield guilty on charges relating to the rape, including the use of a firearm in facilitating the rape, forceful oral copulation, and false imprisonment, according to the information released by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office.

Stubblefield was, however, acquitted on charges relating to the rape and oral copulation of a person incapable of giving consent.

Stubblefield was immediately sent back to prison without bail after the verdict’s conclusion.

Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen issued a statement after the trial, where he praised the conviction as a victory for victims everywhere.

According to Rosen, the victim had long struggled with learning disabilities before becoming self-sufficient and holding down a series of jobs, a path that was radically altered by Stubblefield’s violent assault.

Stubblefield to Appeal Charges

Stubblefield’s attorney, Allen Sawyer, maintained that he still believes in his client’s innocence, stating that he and his team will appeal the ruling sometime in the near-future. Sawyer complained that the COVID-19 pandemic led to circumstances that prevented his client from receiving due process.

The jury was in panel in January but had their sessions suspended for weeks and months at a time, which Sawyer argued could have influenced their decision-making. Sawyer admitted that the verdict is a tough break for Stubblefield, but stated that his client was resilient and ready to face future legal battles to clear his name.

Dana Stubblefield was a defensive tackle for the San Francisco 49ers, spending a total of seven years with the team. He was the 49ers’ first round draft pick in 1993. In his 11 year playing career spanning between 1993 and 2003, Stubblefield spent his first seven years with the 49ers, before moving to the Washington Redskins for three years. Stubblefield played his final season with the Oakland Raiders.
