  • Denver Broncos’ Eyioma Uwazurike was suspended indefinitely by the NFL
  • He is the latest player to be suspended for violating the NFL’s gambling policy
  • So far in 2023, 10 players have been suspended for gambling related offenses

The NFL’s gambling related policy and its effectiveness is coming under the scanner after yet another player was banned by the organization for violating its policy on gambling.

The latest player to be suspended is Eyioma Uwazurike from the Denver Broncos.

Eyioma Uwazurike Suspended Indefinitely By NFL

Eyioma Uwazurike who played 8 games for the Broncos last season was informed on July 24 that the NFL had decided to suspend him indefinitely. The NFL decided to impose the suspension as Uwazurike placed bets on NFL games during the last season.

The Broncos released a statement and confirmed that it was informed by the NFL that Uwazurike was suspended indefinitely for violations of its gambling policy. The Broncos said they fully cooperated with the NFL during the investigation and takes anything that comprises the integrity of the game extremely seriously.

The NFL gambling policy does not allow players to bet on any NFL games, indulging in gambling related activities from an NFL team facility, from engaging in any Daily Fantasy Sports and asking third parties to place bets on their behalf.

Uwazurike will be out of action for a minimum of 12 months and will have the option to appeal for reinstatement only after July 24, 2024 based on the statement from the NFL. The Broncos are yet to confirm if they will release Uwazurike or continue to have him on their roster.

NFL Gambling Related Suspensions Grow

Uwazurike is now the 10th player to be suspended by the NFL for gambling related violations in 2023. His suspension has now put the NFL’s policy on gambling under the scanner as questions are being raised about how effective it is in discouraging players from engaging in gambling related activities.

Some of the players that have been suspended so far in 2023 for gambling related violations include Rashod Berry and Isaiah Rodgers from the Indianapolis Colts, Quintez Cephus, Jameson Williams, C.J. Moore and Stanley Berryhill from the Detroit Lions.

Broncos coach Sean Payton said during the off-season the NFL’s gambling policy wasn’t the problem but the implementation was a concern as they had to make sure players understood it and the consequences for violating it!
