Gunners give Wenger a send-off to remember
Arsenal produced a stellar performance to hammer Burnley 5-0 at the Emirates Stadium to give veteran boss Arsene Wenger a big send-off.
The Gunners took the lead on 14 minutes, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a close-range effort from a cross from Alexandre Lacazette. The Gunners doubled their lead in first-half stoppage-time, Lacazette scoring a Hector Bellerin cross.
The north London side scored a third in the second period, as full-back Sead Kolasinac smashed home a powerful effort after a good from England international Jack Wilshere. Nigerian international Alex Iwobi got in on the act, picking up a square pass from Aubameyang and firing high into the roof of the net.
Aubameyang then doubled his tally, firing home from eight yards from a Bellerin cross. There was still time for Danny Welbeck to his the bar from long-range, as the Gunners produced a fantastic performance in Wenger’s last game at the Emirates as Arsenal boss.
The victory means that Arsenal secured sixth-place and a place in the Europa League group stages ahead of the visitors. The Clarets had already sealed a top seven spot and a spot in Europa League qualifying for next season.
Chelsea record vital win against Liverpool
Fifth-place Chelsea went into Sunday’s game against third-place Liverpool in desperate need of a victory at Stamford Bridge to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Antonio Conte’s side produced a 1-0 victory to make things nervous for both Liverpool and Tottenham above them.
Liverpool started the more brightly of the two teams, with Thibaut Courtois keeping out an effort from Roberto Firmino, before producing a double save from Senegalese winger Sadio Mane.
However, the Blues took the lead on 32 minutes, as Olivier Giroud headed a deflected Victor Moses cross past Loris Karius into the far corner of the net. The goal was the Frenchman’s third in his last four Premier League appearances for the Blues.
Chelsea looked the more likely to score next too, as Eden Hazard saw a shot well saved by Karius and Marcos Alonso volleyed just wide with an excellent effort. Former Chelsea striker Dominic Solanke had the best chances of the second half for Jurgen Klopp’s team, heading over from 12 yards before heading wide of goal. However, Chelsea held on to claim what could be a crucial win.
The win means that Conte’s team are just two points behind fourth-place Tottenham, while also three points behind third-place Liverpool. However, the Blues have a game in-hand of the Reds. Conte’s team are still outsiders to seal a Champions League spot.
Huddersfield pick-up outstanding point at City
Struggling Huddersfield produced a solid display to draw 0-0 at champions Manchester City. The Citizens were slightly sluggish, no doubt distracted by the fact that they were set to lift the trophy after the game.
The point could prove a massive one for Huddersfield, who are just three points above the relegation zone with two games remaining. The Yorkshire side face two tough games at Chelsea in midweek and then hosting Arsenal on the final day of the season.
