Some giants of the European game took to the field in Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter-final first legs. The games produced wins for European champions Real Madrid and German giants Bayern Munich. Here is what happened in those all-important clashes:

Ronaldo scores stunner in Real Madrid win

Cristiano Ronaldo scores wonder goal against Juventus in Champions League QF First Leg 2018Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo scored a stunning bicycle kick in Real Madrid’s 3-0 victory in Turin against Italian giants Juventus at the Allianz Stadium.

Ronaldo scored the opening goal of the game on three minutes. Isco found the veteran star ten yards out and the forward fired past Gianluigi Buffon. However, the highlight of the game arrived on 64 minutes. The ball arrived in the box and Ronaldo flung himself into the air to produce a sublime bicycle to double the visitors lead.

The goal was that good that even the home fans applauded the effort. Ronaldo has now scored in a record ten consecutive Champions League games.

The home side’s chances of getting into the game were all-but ended on 66 minutes, as striker Paolo Dybala saw red following his second bookable offence. The visitor’s rubbed salt into the home side’s proverbial wounds on 72 minutes, as Brazilian international Marcelo added the third goal of the game.

The victory underlined Real Madrid’s credentials as one of the favourites to win the Champions League, as they now already have one foot in the semi-finals courtesy of the fantastic victory against the in-form Italian giants.

Bayern claim narrow win in Seville

The other Champions league quarter final was a much tighter affair, as Bavarian giants Bayern Munich recorded a 2-1 win at Sevilla’s Sanchez Pizjuan.

Pablo Sarabia gave the home side the lead past the half hour mark after missing a gilt-edge chance just minutes before the opening goal. Escudero crossed and Sarabia got to the ball ahead of Juan Benat and lifted the ball past Sven Ulreich into the far corner of the net.

The lead lasted just five minutes, though, as the visitors experienced a major stroke of luck. Franck Ribery’s cross took a deflection and hit Sevilla full-back Jesus Navas before finding its way past David Soria in the home goal. The German side took the lead on 68 minutes. Ribery floated a cross to the far post and Thiago Alcântara’s header took a deflection off Escudero before finding the net.

The victory means that Bayern boss Jupp Heynckes has now won a record 12 straight Champions League games, which is a competition record. The win also gave the German side a big advantage heading into the second leg at the Allianz Arena, where the Bundesliga champions are formidable opponents.

Big games on Wednesday night

The second round of quarter-final first legs take place on Wednesday night, with Liverpool hosting Manchester City and Barcelona hosting Roma at the Nou Camp. You can find previews of those games in yesterday’s article. There will be reviews of tonight’s two big games in tomorrow’s games.

Are Real Madrid now the favourites to win the Champions League?
