According to the Daily Mirror, Catalan giants Barcelona are eyeing a shock big-money summer move for Manchester United full-back Luke Shaw.
The England international has recently been on the receiving end of criticism from Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho for his performances. A half-time substitution in United’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Brighton led to the barbed comments from Mourinho.
Barcelona eying a bargain
The 22-year-old full-back could be a bargain buy for the Spanish champions-elect this summer, as he will have just 12 months left on his contract in Manchester this summer.
Shaw’s contract situation means that the full-back could be snapped up for a cut-price fee this summer. Barcelona has spent big in the last few transfer windows and are expected to sign Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann for big money this summer.
However, it seems the Catalan giants are on the lookout for an alternative to Jordi Alba, as French full-back Lucas Digne looks set to leave the club after an unconvincing spell this summer.
Shaw seems like the perfect addition to the squad, as he is young, talented and would not cost a major fee unlike other possible transfer targets, including Bayern Munich’s David Alaba.
Shaw set to leave Manchester United
It seems there is now no way back for Luke Shaw at Manchester United under current boss Jose Mourinho. He arrived for a then-massive fee of around £27million at Old Trafford from Southampton in 2014.
He was supposed to go from strength to strength at United and become first choice left-back for England after immensely impressing at Southampton. However, Shaw has struggled with lengthy injuries and for form since joining.
Shaw’s supposed dream move to Manchester United has turned into a nightmare. It looks like the only way to fulfil his potential is move elsewhere, as it looks unlikely he will ever succeed at Old Trafford.
Barcelona would be a mixed move
Barcelona are one of the giants of European football. The Catalan giants are also one of the favourites to win this season Champions League after virtually sealing the Spanish top-flight title already.
Barcelona are one of the clubs that most footballers inspire to play for. They are one of the elite clubs of the European game. It would be hard for most players to turn down a move to the giants.
Luke Shaw would no doubt be any different, as not only would he end his troubled time at United, he would be moving to a massive club. The only worry would be that the full-back may also struggle with the pressure of playing for such a big club. Then there is the prospect of playing second fiddle to Jordi Alba.
However, if Barcelona does make a move for the young full-back, then it seems unlikely he would turn down a move to the Catalan giants.
Could Luke Shaw be playing for Barcelona next season?
