During their speeches as recent gaming industry conferences in Las Vegas, executives from major sportsbooks and sports organizations emphasized the way real time monitoring, together with data analysis, and athlete education have turned into essential tools in identifying potential integrity issues before they escalate.

Richard Taylor, Director of Responsible Gaming at BetMGM, said integrity concerns have existed in sports for decades, but legal and regulated sports betting markets now provide operators with far greater visibility into unusual betting patterns.

He explained that licensed operators can monitor betting activity as it happens and share alerts with leagues and regulators when unusual activity is detected.

According to Taylor, sportsbooks use geolocation technology, data monitoring, and dedicated investigation teams to spot suspicious player behavior.

Hession commented that integrity issues are a lot more common in lower profile competitions with smaller prize pools, while incidents involving major professional leagues remain relatively rare.

He cited past investigations involving baseball, basketball and mixed martial arts where suspicious betting patterns triggered alerts and led to further reviews by sports organizations.

Sports leagues are also increasing their efforts to prevent problems before they occur. NASCAR’s Director of Sports Betting, Ray Koch, said the organization works closely with integrity monitoring firms to review betting activity and educate drivers, employees, and team personnel.
