Indiana Opens Bidding for New Northeast Casino License

Governor Mike Braun was the one who officially inked the measure into law, which converts an unused horse racing license into a casino license. The total number of gaming licenses in the state will remain the same.

$150M Application Fee, $500M Investment

The Indiana Gaming Commission will be responsible for managing the competitive process. All companies interested in obtaining the coveted license must submit their applications by December 1.

Following a thorough review of the proposals, the commission will select a winner. The lucky company will need to comply with substantial financial and legal requirements, including paying a $150 million application fee and committing to invest $500 million in construction and development over the next five years.

According to estimates, the total project cost would reach roughly $650 million, an amount that could potentially limit the number of bidders, despite industry watchers expressing optimism that several companies will participate.

November Referendum Needed

Local approval is also a critical step. Before construction can begin, voters in the selected county must pass a referendum in November.

Additionally, county commissioners must grant approval. Allen County, home to Fort Wayne, is seen as the front-runner due to its population size and established tourism infrastructure.

Smaller counties, like DeKalb and Steuben, face more challenges, although Steuben’s access to major highways may make it more competitive.

Questions remain about the potential economic impact and the level of public support, as neighboring states with existing casinos may attempt to influence voter opinion or compete for customers once the new casino opens.

All in all, the new casino license represents a major opportunity for northeast Indiana. If approved by voters and county officials, the project could create jobs, increase tourism, and generate significant tax revenue for the region.
