The 2019 World Series of Poker $10,000 Main Event is creating quite a few records in the festival’s long history. The event has attracted a total of 8,569 players, making it the second-biggest field of all time, just behind the 2006 edition which took place at the height of the poker boom when Jamie Gold bested an 8,773-entry field to win $12 million as the top prize.
According to figures provided by the WSOP, this year’s Main Event generated a total prize pool of $80,548,600 which is the second-biggest in the history of the event. The winner is set to take home the second-largest top prize of $10 million, the same winning prize amount claimed by Martin Jacobson back in 2014.
This year’s Day 1C field, which drew a total of 4,877 players, also set a new record for the biggest starting flight in WSOP Main Event history.
Chris Moneymaker win at the 2003 WSOP Main Event revolutionized the game of poker and changed the WSOP Main Event forever. Since then, the WSOP Main Event has grown to become one of the biggest events in poker history. From attracting 839 entries in 2003, the number increased massively over the next three years, 2,576 in 2004, 5,619 in 2005, with 2006 recording the highest-ever turnout of 8,773.
The WSOP Main Event has enjoyed year-over-year growth over the last four years, with the fields increasing by 33% since 2015. The last two years in particular attracted two of the biggest fields, with 7,221 in 2017, and 7,874 in 2018. The events were won respectively by Scott Blumstein ($8,150,000) and John Cynn ($8,800,000).
87 Countries Represented
Over the years, the WSOP Main Event has grown into an international affair. This year saw players from 87 different countries coming over to Vegas to take part, four more than the number recorded in 2018.
This year, The United States (6,110) tops the list of countries with the most representatives in the event, followed by Canada (420), the United Kingdom (414), France (151), and China (117). The rest of the players came from Germany (105), Brazil (104), Australia (91), Russia (79), and Austria (73).
The top 1,286 players in the 2019 WSOP Main Event are all guaranteed a minimum payout of $15,000. Each player making the final table is all guaranteed to win seven figures. Massive pay jumps are in store for the final four players and the winner will ultimately take home $4 million more than the runner-up.
