Summary:
- The US women’s national soccer team has lost to Mexico for the first time in 14 years.
- The defeat happened in the final group-play game of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup.
- Mexico’s 2-0 win is already sending shockwaves around the soccer world.
At the start of the week, a crowd made of over 11,600 women’s soccer fans gathered at Dignity Health Sports Park to witness a historical moment on the field.
Lizbeth Ovalle and Mayra Pelayo scored two iconic goals that lifted Mexico women’s national soccer team to an incredible 2-0 win over the US women’s national soccer team (USWNT) during the final group-play game of the CONCACAF W Gold Cup.
Well Deserved Result
Mexico’s unexpected victory marks their second win against the US in the 43 games they played, and the first in almost 14 years.
The last time Mexico managed to beat the USWNT was during the CONCACAF World Cup qualifications in November 2010.
The result also broke the USWNT’s unbeaten streak of 80 games with 78 wins and two draws while marking the first on home soil against CONCACAF opposition in 14 years.
Midfielder Ovalle put Mexico ahead in the 38th minute while substitute Pelayo’s right-footed effort paid off during the second-half stoppage time.

While the brilliant duo led Mexico to its second win ever against the US team, the victory was a team effort. Mexico presented itself as physical and aggressive, making its opponents uncomfortable in the first half of the game that mostly unfolded on the American end.

Mexico was close to scoring again in first-half stoppage time when Karla Nieto beat Alyssa Naeher from a distance and watched her right-footed shot bang off the bar.
While the US sent six World Cup champions to the field and called two more off the bench, at times, the chemistry between them seemed to be completely off and the team appeared as if they were meeting for the first time and never played together.

The US meanwhile advances as the second-place team.
USWNT’s forward Alex Morgan commented on the loss, saying that it is not just CONCACAF that is raising its level “but the whole world” is doing so.
Morgan also mentioned this is going to help all the leagues around the world while calling Mexico “a product of that with their league“.
“CONCACAF is not what it was 14 years ago”, he added.
