Thomas Tuchel appointed as PSG head coach

Big spending French club PSG have appointed former Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel as their new head coach. The 44-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the club from the French capital to replace Spanish boss Unai Emery.

Former Valencia boss Emery in the summer of 2016, with the onus on winning the Champions League. However, the club has failed to progress past the quarter-final stages of Europe’s elite competition, this season suffering defeat in the last eight against Real Madrid. The 46-year-old is still a highly-rated tactician and is reportedly attracting the interest of Premier League Arsenal.

Tuchel snubbed Arsenal to move to Paris

Since leaving Dortmund last summer, Thomas Tuchel has been linked with a number of vacant positions. Reportedly, Tuchel was interested in taking the Arsenal job last summer, but veteran boss Arsene Wenger signed a new deal in north London.

It seems the German had a better offer this summer, as the resources at the French club are likely to be far greater than at the Premier League club.

Regarded as one of the best young coaches in Europe

Thomas Tuchel has built himself a reputation as one of Europe’s brightest young coaches. The 44-year-old earned his reputation for the stellar jobs he has done at Mainz and Dortmund. Due to his coaching patch and preferred style of pressing, attacking, possession-based football, Tuchel is often compared to Dortmund predecessor Jurgen Klopp.

However, Tuchel is less flamboyant on the touchline and in life in general than the current Liverpool boss. Due to Tuchel’s style being quite similar to that of his compatriot the comparisons are still made between the pair.

Tuchel is one of the new breed of young German head coaches. He can coach, but also has good man-management skills, which will be needed with the big names in the PSG squad.

Hired to win the Champions League

In general, PSG usually has enough quality to win Ligue One on an annual basis. Last season was a rare exception, when Monaco under Leonardo Jardim enjoyed an extraordinary season, then lost a host of them to rivals.

However, after spending big last summer on the likes of Neymar and Kylian Mbappe from Monaco, the Parisians have won the French title with ease.

Winning the French league title is no longer enough for the PSG owners, who have invested a vast amount of money big names in recent years. The club from the French capital is not a member of that exclusive elite club of European clubs. However, they are still likely to start next season as one of the favourites to win the Champions League.

Just as Emery’s mission was to win the Champions League, the same goes for Tuchel. PSG will back Tuchel in the transfer market to achieve European domination. The German has a big challenge on his hands fulfilling the big expectations in Paris. The likes of Laurent Blanc, Carlo Ancelotti and of course Emery have failed to win the Champions League.

Can Thomas Tuchel be the boss to guide PSG to Champions League glory next season?
